Is BOTM too elitist??

I did not detect any elitism anywhere on this site really, the average car costs more than most people's bike collections. One or two massive exceptions, naturally!

It is silly to think of Kleins as elitist, they are common as you like. They are not exactly expensive, compared to exotic Ti and Carbon bikes for example. They were also serious competitive race bikes, designed with racing in mind and very much the perfect tool for the job. Happily, form and function breathed together in harmony producing bikes that were beautiful and effective. An Aluminium fist in a Day-Glo glove.

It is the Attitude )) of some owners/fanboys that taints certain brands with this 'elitist' label.

More insecurity and tunnel vision than elitism.

BiTD I thought the Dolomite was just about the best looking bike I had ever seen; at the '92 Malverns the guy camped next to me (from Thetford, His name escapes me... ) had a brand new Mag 21, fitted it to his Dolomite, rode one lap and took it off again because he didn't like it...

...anyway, I digress;

The point being, that is still one of my favourite bikes but I wouldn't want one. I can't be arsed to read the b*ll*cks on this months BoTM thread so I shall just wait for the poll to be announced, skim through the entries and vote for the bike that really catches my eye...

...which will probably be an early Yeti because I think they are such pretty bikes (and quite frankly that is all the criteria I need!).

I must say I'm a little turned off of Botm this time round. There has clearly been some less then perfect behavior. Some of you have responded quite strongly in defense of your favorite bike, food, stock or sardine.
I would like to lay blame right where it belongs;
On the chaps who thought up this months theme. Pitting brand against brand against brand was bound to make trouble. You've effectively placed member against member against member with this theme. VS, VS, VS is straight off a fight card, how could it not have ended badly?
In future you might want to avoid themes that imply any bike brand may be better than another.

It's the members that took up the fight, not the mods for thinking up the theme.... just because someone suggests a competition in a boxing ring, doesn't mean one has to get all Tyson and start biting ears off!

The shame is on the users that got personal, rude, and overstepped the mark

Anyway, it's an utterly pointless and futile discussion.... all the bikes are nice, people should grow up and just bloody enjoy life :roll:

sometimes I have to remind myself of the inherent nerd factor of retro mountain bike (nerd) internet forum posting (double nerd) enthusiasts (nerd)

Sinnerman, I apologise, I shouldn't have named names in my original post, but it was the principle occasion where I thought commentary in the BOTM nominations thread should have been cut out.

Your enthusiastic contributions to this forum are immensely valuable, your builds are fantastic, as I have always maintained. Be disappointed with me if you wish. But it is my opinion that the gushing, tear jerking, hero worship (perhaps I was out of place calling it sycophantic) that went on in that thread should be contained to the build thread. (Indeed it was for the most part already posted there.)

I respect you & your factual contributions and am in awe of the majority of your bikes. I just really grate with your, in my mind, persistent over emotional presentation of the Hardisty in the BOTM nomination thread.

I understand you may see my reasoning for this complaint to be related to my entry placing second that month, but had I known it had stood a chance I would have fixed the bike up and cleaned the blood from the handlebars before posting a new picture.

I'd like to say the best bike won, but in my mind it didn't, the Harry Quinn was my choice that month.

No hard feelings, just an opinion that commentary on the nomination threads should be kept to a minimum, with further information available in the build thread- And it doesn't look like I'm alone with that one. Otherwise it comes across as looking like a campaign.

A Numbers Game

200 motivated/opinionated folk each represent their viewpoint on, say, 12 random and interesting bikes.

Resultant is approximately 50 people agreeing on a 'democratic' 'winner'.

One could infer that 150 people are somehow 'wrong' in their judgement or that 50 people are equally misguided to share such a view - if one was so inclined.

Cue a heated debate about those opinions by those predisposed to a bicker....

Should not people be satisfied with the simple pleasure of viewing the selection and the fact that they got to express their opinion succinctly and quietly in a vote - not be dissatisfied that their vote/opinion did not become part of the average man's view of the world?

Personally, I'd rather have my pick from all the BotM non-winners than be given each BotM winner...
