Is BOTM too elitist??

Was Rumpfy Banned? :D
No. It's just been a while. He is selective about when, where and what he posts.

Haha, yep. I've been posting here and there (positive stuff even!).

As to the topic of this entire thread....I disagree that its a popularity contest based on who is posting the bike. If it was, I would not have the title under my handle that I do.

As others have said, its not how much spent, but rather how much passion and attention to detail was invested right down to the quality of photograph taken. Sore losers complain, the rest of you enjoy the BoTM for what it is....good clean fun.

Wow ,still going and not locked yet

My tuppence worth :)
BOTM should be for ridden bikes i feel :?
I see too many being built for the compo only, from stocks of nos parts and then dismantled to go back one supposes to their original packaging.

This I have issues with. Why is it bad to build a bike and not ride it.

First, I will say I ride all my bikes. and have plenty of pics to prove it. I have felt the joy of being the first one to use a 25 year old component.

Now, last week I bought a 70's vintage NOS Uniroyal Knobby for the rear my Champion project (still need one more? anybody). Why is it when I complete this build in order to get complete approval from the RBUK crowd, the bike needs to be ridden with photo's showing plenty of air. I have a few other vintage bikes that I ride the heck out of in the rain and mud. This bike is 34 years old and some of the parts are extremely difficult to replace. Will you not be happy until Rumpfy has gotten a hold of the last Ground Control and skidded it into oblivion?

I simply ask why destroy every old bike through use? What is wrong with hanging a completed bike project from the mantle for others to enjoy? Do we tell coin collectors that the only way to enjoy their finds is to buy something with it?

And because threads are always better with pictures:

It's a lot of tedious work cleaning parts to make them look nice. Why oh Why is it required to some of you that we must go out right away and get them dirty for acceptance?

I have trashed plenty of vintage parts. I don't feel the need to trash all my projects. The only reason I can see someone tearing down a build to make another one is if they are trading up or selling off. I don't believe there are people out there with one NOS groupset that they are placing on different frames just to enter BOTM. Too many of the components would be incompatable for that and too many of you would catch on.

Ride hard but save a few components for the next genenration.

Who exactly is in the RBUK crowd? If there is a Retrobike Crowd I very much hope I'm in it and to be honest it bothers me not in the slightest if you (or anyone else) doesn't ride one of your bikes. You (as in Ductape) have a similar number of posts as the OP so surely you're as much 'part of the crowd' as the next man.

Think we all need to remember the opinions expressed here by individuals are just that. Opinions expressed by individuals.

Read through the previous 10 pages in this post or review a BOTM thread (as I am sure you have. I am too lazy to cut and paste), and you will see this theme repeated on occasion. Not all RBUK'ers, but those are the RBUKers I am addressing. My own personal issue no doubt, but it always makes me wonder. And, what better post to call it out on than this one.

Agreed, all personal opinion. If I can get one of these people to re assess their opinion, possibly it will be one more set of decent XC-2's for your kid to find in 30 years.

Believe it or not I have skimmed the odd BoTM thread (or RBUKBOTM as I like to call it). Yes, some retrobike members express the opinions you mentioned two or three posts above. Some others members (such as yourself for instance) express a differing opinion.

And yes, this topic has been played out countless times across numerous threads with similar (or the same) protagonists expressing the same opinion.

As for whoever mentioned locking this as long as it stays reasonably civil there's no need. This is the bit where I insert a witty animated gif of someone flogging a dead horse.
