I found this pretty interesting, a mid-70's Alan bike modified by MTB pioneering aluminium frame builder Charlie Cunningham.
Designed primarily for climbing apparently, and weighing 16.6 lbs it probably climbed like a stick of wet spaghetti, but there are some nice modifications made by Charlie...

2 Toe straps per side? I used to do the same, but if you're saving weight?
Lot's of intriguing features on that bike though. What's the idea behind the gear cable route? Can't be a weight thing or the excess cable end would have been cut short to save a gram.
Good to see the builder didn't go the drilled-out water bottle route though - never got on with those. :D

2 toestraps for extra security I guess, similar to track bikes, I think this bike was for hill climbs, hence the 1x5 gearing, don't want your foot coming adrift and costing valuable seconds.
No idea about the cable routing from the bar end style shifter though! It's different!
