How Good A Racer Were You BITD?

Reading through some of the posts, it would appear theres quite a few racers amongst us. So how good were you BITD? What standard did you achieve? What would you say was your proudest moment?
I wasn't a racer, could never be bothered with the training required to be any good.  I did the odd race. The NEMBA at Middlesbrough the most notable, but had to retire with backache  I did a couple of local summer evening races, which were fun and i didn't fair too badly, but nothing to write home about

Feel free to upload pics

All my achievements were from the 1990's, and mostly on the road.

Time trials; 58mins for 25 mile and 22mins for 10 mile.

Various top 3 placings in road racing, and a few wins too :D

Represented East Anglia at the ESCA 3 day International (we managed 3rd overall).

Winner of National Youth Week 1996.

Unbeaten in hill climb racing, and still an undefeated course record holder 8)

Offered a place on the GB Junior Development Squad for track racing.

What happened with that? Did you take the offer?

Took it, did a couple of months with them (Bradley Wiggins was on the squad as well at the time), but the National Coach wanted me to move to Manchester to make it 'easier to get to training' :( I was 16 or so at the time and there was no way that I could expect my parents to do that!

So, it kind of drifted away from me........

and I then quit racing at 18 yrs old.

Too much, too young? I know of a few local riders who showed promise as kids and basically became sick of cycling. They also found it hard balancing the training with uni and the whole social/drinking apsect. A lot of them no longer cycle

That was me :( (just replace Uni with work)

Earned a place in the Marshalls Cycles race team and promptly retired from racing due to injury, this was back in 1996 for those of you that know me

won the welsh champs in 98, then schmoo promptly took the award back off me when he realised I didnt have a license, gave the title to some kid with a license who came in 8mins later
won the sports race at the grundig world cup newnham park in 98 (zak toogood who later went raced in the GB squad was 2nd)
5th sports national champs 98, was running 2nd until some tw@t crashed into me on a DH & took out my front mech

if anything I think I overdid the racing thing, 85-99 & away most weekends. i did a southern series in ashton court a few years ago, 5th in masters but my heart really wasnt in it, fairly bored 1/2 way round! XC races seem really low attendance these days compared to BITD? atmosphere was sorely lacking!

. I'm into more wilderness riding, mtb hols, all day long rides & more technical trails these days :D

I'm just waiting for Tim Davies to respond.. 7th 91 world champs, british NPS champ etc :D

I remember Schmoo handing out Jelly Babies to riders as they past  Top bloke 8)

I was awful. Raced a few events round the South East in 1989/90.

The best race was somewhere near Dorking. Some guy turned up on a 5 speed look-a-like MTB with caliper brakes wearing a motorbike helmet. He wasn't a thin chap. His warm-up involved smoking and a burger.

Come the pistol, he's off like a bat out of hell, never seen anything like it. The course started down a slope with a 90 degree corner after about 70 metres. This guy was first into the corner but totally lost it, and did an endo across the path and took out 75% of the chasing field. It was carnage. Some of the competitors were giving the cornering king a tiny bit of verbal abuse.

Being at the back I went round said carnage and briefly led the race until I fell off at the single-log bridge over a stream. Bruised and battered and with a wonky front wheel (I had to release the straddle so had no front brake) I was overtaken toward the end by an old guy on an RC-100 who was just out for a ride and didn't even know there was a race on.

Shortly afterwards I realised that what I enjoy is being out there *points* and being on my bike and that I have barely a competitive bone in my body.
