How easy is it to swap a press in steerer?

I've got some Answer Carbon bmx forks for a 24" wheel. I've just bought a lovely SE Racing Floval Flyer frame and landing gear forks. I want to use the Answer forks but the steerer is about 10mm to short to be safe to use. The legs bolt in and the steerer is pressed in. The crown looks very similar to answer mtb suspension forks. Does anybody have any knowledge of these? Are 1"1/8 steerers all different?
I would have put this the bmx section but as the crown is so similar to an mtb one I decided to post it here.
EDIT: In light of the posts below and an attempted crown swap, which failed. Is it straight forward to swap a press in steerer? Are most steerers the same(ish)?

Tried a low stacking headset? That may give you a bit more steerer for the stem to clamp into

If it's a new one it will likely have an integrated headset.

If it is, Odyssey reckon their integrated headsets have the lowest stack height.

thanks guys, frame is already fitted with an integrated zero stack headset.
Can I just swap the steerer for a longer similar item?
 
Yeah, looks like they have internal headsets so you're not getting a lower stack height...

Stating the obvious, I'd imagine you could change the fork crown for one with a longer steerer. Don't know if I'd want to get into trying to swap the pressed in tube but you might be more adept than me. A 1/18" MTB steerer will work if you've got a standard fork race for the internal headset (some newer forks have built in races). Has the steerer been cut? Don't know much about race stuff but on the 'freestyle' side everything is very standardised and fork steerers are always long enough to cut to the length you want.

Have you tried Answer's distributor or giving Alans a ring? They are usually very helpful and knowledgeable (Alan is anyway).

I think a complete crown and steerer swap would be the best option. I've got some RST's down the shed, i'll see if that crown fits. If not i'll sell the forks and buy some that are more the age of the frame, as its brand new and the forks are at least 10 years old :wink:
 
I think most steerers are very similar, because they have to fit precisely with a standard crown race. I would guess that they are sufficiently similar to sustain a press fit, but in truth that goes beyond my knowledge.

If the steerer is pressed in, it can be pressed out again just as easily. An auto mechanic with a decent hydraulic press should be able to do it for you.
 
Hmm.... this is a bit of a touchy subject.
Problem might lie in the possibility of the steerer being inserted into a hot crown during production, as the pressed-in steerers on the later Pace forks were. Simply pushing the old steerer out and forcing in a new one can put unknown stresses in the crown-which is why Pace wont swop your steerer unless the whole crown/stanchion assy is replaced.
 
last solution is to weld some extra steerer onto it .

any frame builder should be able to do it .
