Hello foaf. I measured and measured again at the weekend and decided I couldn't quite reach the rim from the chainstays. I had to drill out the plate hole on the seat stays to 6.5mm or whatever the crappy imperial bolt was on the original brake was(well the brake on it when I rescued it).
Once that was done it was a case of trying to get the now slightly too short cable to reach the new position. I could (and perhaps should) have just used new cable inners and outers. However, they were in surprisingly good condition and the outers were the very old ridged ones you can't seem to get anymore. They just reach!
All that remains now is the inevitable fight with the Sturmey gear hub. The replacement gear chain is different. I am going to try and get a different one but if I can't I have read it should still work but may be a little awkward!
I'll take some pictures before I hand the bike over to my mum.
