No one actually knows the facts of what happened between Terry and Ferdinand. Perhaps it would be sensible to wait for the trial at least before making assumptions about that situation.
There is no evidence that Ferdinand is behind the prosecution, so what is all this about him playing the race card? Also, were it him who had reported Terry, it would not be an example of such, as the allegation is of a genuine incidence of racism. No one on the receiving end of that should be expected to tolerate it.
If you refer to someone as black, that is not in itself racist, though it can be.
When you add the expletive it can be racist. Simple. Not really.
If I point over to a guy on the other side of the street, and say, "That black guy there, he is a ****!", it is not automatically racist.
If I point over to a guy on the other side of the street, and say, "That guy there, he is a black ****!", it is a racist remark.
It is complicated, but let us wait to hear what went on at the trial.
Meanwhile here is a tip for anyone in a similar situation.
If someone accuses you of making a derogatory remark, don't quote the accusation in full when responding in denial. You may end up defending that version of events in court, and suggesting you were merely quoting verbatim to explain away video evidence is not going to convince as much as there being no evidence at all.
Personally I think Terry will be vindicated. If he had been overtly racist I am sure at least one of his team mates would have had something to say about it as well as the member of the public who overheard it and reported what they considered as racism.
