That's Richmond for you. Probably the most expensive place to live in Britain , outside oc central London.
Have you looked at Twickenham, Teddington, or St Margarets? A bit cheaper, but not much...

£1200 on rent around me would get you a 5 bed detached house, garage and about an acre of land.
