Getting cheesed off with SS...

Finally got all the kit together to SS my Diablo. 16 tooth non-Surley Surley cog, half-width bolts, Cyclosolo spacer ring kit and Surley Singleator.

Unfortunately with a 32 tooth front, the chain is the worst possible length. With the Surley pulling down, the chain slips on the power stroke giving a horrible 'CHUNG', 'CHUNG', 'CHUNG' effect. If I take the side protector bits off the Singleator, it will go on in push-up mode and work perfectly but the chain runs less than a quarter of an inch from the stay - aaargh!

I can't really afford to start buying other size cogs and rings to experiment but also don't want to give up. A half-link chain sounds like a plausible idea but the general concensus on here is that they are cack :( .

Does it matter if the chain runs close to the stay?
I wouldn't have thought so - it's never going to be able to come into contact with it.

A chain made solely of half links is cack, but using one half link to tidy things up will be OK.
Unless extremely lucky, we've all been there with SS. It'll be worth it when it works. :D

Cheers guys, I've bombed it round and round my dad's garden and it seems like a great ratio :). Will stick with it...

Edit: I've just ordered a couple oh half lins. This should sort it. The chain's REALLY just the wrong length, about 2/3 of a single link gap so I have to remove a whole pair of links...

just looked at the half-link web links. Fuk me, I didnt know such a thing existed. I eventually sourced an old mtb frame with horizontal dropouts to make it all work.

Incidentally, for anyone starting out on SS, I'd advise bigger sprockets and rings, so 40x20 rather than 32x16. It all seems to run smoother (??) and any addition/removal of links has less of a lateral effect (ie less wheel repositioning) cos there's more of a diagonal effect on varying the chain length.
