anyone done it befrore and can tell me if i need a pesky medical certificate signed by GP, no mention of it on website. thanks .
And are tubs a really bad idea?
I've never done it but i've just read their contract, the contract states that you declare yourself to be physically fit, that you have had a checkup and if anything goes wrong or you hurt yourself then its your own fault.
Basically they just want you to sign a waiver, they also want you to pay 5 euros insurance for the day if you aren't a member of the italian cycling federation, which is ontop of the registration fee itself.
Lots of people use tubs but suggest you need some with decent volume (28c) for the strada bianchi and obviously take at least one spare. Might be worth contacting montydog as he used tubs last year.
i was aware of the insurance , i thought that may be enough.thanks again.
the tubs idea is debatable, i'm riding clinchers my mate is considering tubs, an strapping a couple under his seat.. very period, but neither of us have ever changed a tub before, and it looks long enough without having to wait for glue to dry.
2 things.
1. Any spare tub carried really should have been glued anyway. This means that it will have some "stick" on it. One reason why tub used carry a used one as a spare. Also there will be glue left on the rim when you pull one off. Both usually give enough stick. Tip. Leave an inch without glue. Opposite the valve so you can find it. Somewhere to start when you yank it off. Of course if you go for tape you might find, as I do , that half the tape come off with the tub and half stays there. No fun. Many people say that tape is easier but in my experience it isn't and when you have to swap one the above point is noticable. Gluing is dead easy.
I don't believe that the difference between fitting a tub and a Hp is significant. practice of course helps though.
You might find that, depending on tyre choice, that tubs flatten less. Mine do. Maybe its a generation thing but I am always a touch paranoid about long fast descents on HP's . Having had 1 blow out and the tyre come of the rim (thankfully on the rear) I alwsy feel safer on tubs.
2. what is being ridden? What age. Would the bike have had HP's fitted . Decent ones are relatively modern. Eg when I started racing in 81 there was nothing much about. Michelin Elans only.. Tubs or 27x1&1/4.
Just a thought or 2.
Hi,
I used 32mm file-tread CX tubs at 80psi and it was a great decision - I could take the downhills at full chat whereas those on skinny rubber were having difficulty on the loose stuff. It also helped on the soft 'Tuscan toothpaste' after the rain on the dirt road to Montelcino. Fit the fattest tyres you can regardless is my top tip.
I carried a spare tub and some Pitstop but didn't need either - did see plenty of folks with punctures and gave away my pitstop to some guys about 10km to go - I think lots of folks were using old bikes with equally old tubs. Ideal tub would be something like Challenge Pariji-Roubaix - I couldn't get any last year.
There is no need for a medical certificate and there's no bike scrutineering - I felt the organised are trying to maintain a 'spirit' with the event and not a hopped-up Gran Fondo.
I was thinking today that it's coming up and wishing I was going...fantastic event and looking forward to your report.
Hi assuming you're the same on lfgss I think we tried to contact you to tell you we have had one of our party withdraw and therefore have a spare entry, I don't know how easily it could be transferred but perhaps you could still make it.
We seem to have been looking forward to this for ages, every one that has done it reckons it's tough and hilly.
Many eBay hrs searching for vintage jerseys and old shoes, have had great support from this forum with parts and advice.
I'll try and post a pic of my bike later.
My bike's ready to go now. I managed to pick up a 50:36 ring combo for my Campag Victory and a 13-26 screw on block all at the Ripley jumble. My attempts to lay off the pies have failed, so I'm hoping my gears will help out.
I'm on 23mm clinchers so I guess I'm in for a treat! Too late to do anything about it now...
