The cool thing is, these displaced pollution vehicles can be charged up during off peak times, making the whole system more efficient.
unfortunately, no.
Most of western Europe doesn't have the electrical infrastructure to even support a 25% switch to full battery or plug in hybrid.
No matter when you charge.

Unless you trickle charge to a power bank 24/7/solar/wind then charge the car when it needs it.

Dont forget the range for these lovely oil free leccy cars (apart from about 80% of the vehicle) have a range of around 65/ 70 miles on a typical foggy February morning too. I wouldnt be able to get to Milton Keynes and back for me shopping.

Talking of MK, theres two of the new Mahindra EV's there. One was taken out for a demo, drove around MK a bit, parked up for a chat about its qualities. It had to be picked up by the dealer as it had run out of juice.

Which one is that with 100km range?
Small city car I'm guessing. Zoe?
Most of the new ones are moving towards 200-400 km and battery/cabin conditioning during charging. So you get almost full range whatever the temp outside.

Leaf, i3 both get very poor range in cold weather.

The Leaf weighs the same as a Mondeo depending on model.

And dont forget theres now fees for charging points

Yep. You can park free in Milton Keynes if you have an electric, but it has to be plugged in and activated!

Were doomed.

Government policy is totally wrong.

Gov should encourage people to live closer to work so they can use non polluting means of travel such ad walking or cycling.

And should encourage businesses to move closer to the workers.

Investment in IT so office workers dont need to go to office.

Concentrating everything in the centre of london increases more travel into london as will hs2.

Were doomed.

The problem will sort itself out when fossil fuels run out or become too expensive to dig up, nuclear for same reason. There will be no energy to build devices to harness green energy such as solar or wind etc so we will be truly doomed.

Our only hope is nuclear fusion.

Not in my lifetime.

Hmmmm. How's that going to work then? Most people already do live within easy walking or cycling distance of work. Many more have regular, clean and convenient public transport links. Something like 80-85% of the population (in the EU anyway) could easily switch away from the car.

Still, they choose to drive.

Putting the 15-20% at a disadvantage actually does virtually nothing to solve the problem.

Hmmmm. BMW owners not reading the manual. What a surprise.

Don't think the leaf can preheat the battery. Just heats up in use/when charging.

Unfortunate side effect of huge batteries. Even with the weight savings of no engine, gearbox and fuel tank. The power train is heavier. And will remain so until people accept that the vast majority of them don't need a massive range or a huge car. 2 seats and sub 50km will cover most of the population most of the time.

For those it doesn't, get a different car.

Good point just like why is it necessary for parents to drive their children 2 mles to school in a massive 4x4. People have the money so they make the choice and screw everyone else. It is a shift in attitude that wont come voluntarily. Were definitely doomed.
