Have I built these incorrect?

The pin is too short to fit into the pin holes in the frame

You need canti studs that haven't got such large spanner flats on them. They are too fat to go inside the spring cover.

Some models don't use spring holes. They tension off themselves.

What he said, screw the bolts in, then use a flat spanner to adjust tension. The springs don’t go into the frame.
