Dating a Claud Butler

Hi I am new to this Forum but wonder if anyone can help me date the Claud Butler I have just purchased?
I think it is very early from the Fork style and top of Steerer Tube.

The serial number on the bottom of BB and Steerer Tube is 982165.
I am not sure of the model, there was no sign on the frame but the centre panel was overpainted black at some time in it's life.

I have had it resprayed as close as I could to the original and am now to embark on rebuild to use it at this years Anjou Vintage Velo.

He has done 3 for me now but the Claud Buler is the oldest, he also did;
Venturelli Palermo, which I still have.

Peuget P.10, which I sold on.

.....possibly a 1939 Claud Butler All Rounder? The frame angles/lugs/head clip/mudguard eyes etc. all point to it being so but the flat seat stay caps look slightly different, would welcome a more informed opinion

Hi,
nice ! Its certainly an August 1939, nailing the model is a bit harder, as the catalogues are okay for a reference, but they are designed for presentation at trade fairs and senting out to retail outlets advertising next years models, which of course could change by the time of ordering. An allrounder is a possible and so is the tourist anglais, below is an image from the 1938 catalogue, don't forget war was just around the corner at the time of the build, so may never nail it. Is there any evidence/remains of a Benelux hanger bracket under the chainstay? If there was one originally it may have been removed to 'modernise' the frame to accept dropout hung rear mechs. The one you have looks to be a Huret Svelto which is way out of period. A Simplex or Huret Tour de France would look good - if you can find one.

Thanks Chaps

Very helpful, the gear change on the top tube is a Cyclo Benelux.
The Svelto hangs on a adaptor which clamps in the drop out.
The frame has not been modified in any way fortunately.

It looks 1939 to me, with chater cast lugs. The twin cable Cyclo gear in the catalogue is far earlier, I think originated in 1933, The Benelux was about 1950.

whilst similar to Chater Lea the lugs are C.B's own "Super-Cutaways" popular on their frames from the late 1930's
