Cost of a build

GT steve sold me really nice un-restored cro-mega for under £200
i built a near wish list pace (cooks/syncros/pulstar/machinetech/srp/etc)
for £650 all in but the frame was the biggest chunk of cash ,so theres
bargains to be had ,just dont be too specific about your build

welcome to cashconverters .mtb

You'll be waiting a while for a Ti-Mega (and get saving!) but if I were you I'd look out for a complete bike (prob Cro-Mega as the Al-Mega's turn to mince) and restore it. You can then spend as much or as little as you want. Keep the original paint and source some XT goodies and it shouldn't cost too much. Other option is re-paint, new decals, replace parts etc and spend as much as you've got. 8)

I'd get a complete bike then do it up over time as funds allow. :D

Thanks for all the responses guys.

I guess the main barrier to this is that I need two steeds. One for myself, one for the wife. I cant very well go off and get a nice retro ti bike and give my wife a halfords.

I'll give this some thought I think and keep an eye on the for sale section :)

Buy her a shiny BSO from Halfords, and show her what a loving martyr you are having to make do with an old 'wreck'

the wife thing usually goes along the lines of she gets the expensive one she wants ,rides it twice and decides she doesn't like it
you on the other hand are left with a cheap pile of rubbish cos there's no money left

if you do buy wifey a bike make sure it would be suitable for you
when she takes up badminton/belly dancing/going back to college etc

To be fair to her indoors, she's the one who found my old MTB mag and asked why we didnt have bikes. She's really the primary motivator here!

Then again, she also goes shooting and fishing with me. I married GI Jane :o

In that case why not see if she's tempted to build her own - no seriously! I don't know why more women don't have a go - it's a challenge that I've found it quite addictive and the bike I ride the most is an eccentric ti model I built myself from a custom frame, mix of road and MTB parts and drop bars.

I've also built up a C16R which are not expensive by the way if you are looking for a bike for the OH - and now I'm just finishing a single speed built up from a youth size custom steel frame from the mid nineties

Only disadvantage I've found is that my OH now refuses totally to do anything for himself bike wise - I have to service it, adjust it and if he had his way even clean it!

Hi CAS,

I think she probably will once she's learned the basics. She's trying to learn carpentry part time too and I casually suggested she start making humidors...for her benefit of course.

She's doing pretty well so far, managed to memorise frame parts and so on, so we'll see :)
