I'm in the process of rebuilding a 90's rocky mountain cirrus looking for a photo of actual decal of the custom paint by rocky
also anyone who had any success in stripping down the clear coat and returning the finish to the original state
sanded and scotchbrite already now too shiny
\body shop suggested glass bead blasting

btw, i'm thinking the frame finish you're after is "oxidized". i've owned my Cirrus since new and it has a nice satin finish to it which is just from the raw aluminum being exposed to air all these years, which i'm guessing is what you're after.

have a read here if you want to promote that reaction quicker:

Re:

Finally some pictues :D glad to see some one else with a cirrus ( although mine is a few sizes bigger) I would agree with rockimtn about the oxidation look. I don't know if I will rub salt on my frame. Don't like the idea of putting somthing corrosive on aluminum although if you nutralize it it would be ok. Just worries me because I have seen the affects of salt on aluminum first hand with my aluminum work trailer and it's not pretty if your not careful especially under the decals. If you want to and have time keep an eye on my build. I'm Hoping to get my frame back on Saturday. Then I'm planning to take step by step photos documenting the stripping brushing and polishing process. Also hard to tell by the picture were you able to get all the clear coat off? I would still say the best thing to do would be to sand it with the finest grit sand paper ie. 1000-2000 grit. And an sos pad then polish with aluminum polish and THEN oxidize if desired.
Let me know how it goes!

Yes i finally spent the last four hours with scotch brite pads around the welds to get the last of the clear off ...I'm also considering media blasting with glass or soda blasting to take the shine off instead of oxidizing with salt ..just dropped it off to the blasting ...
what are you doing for parts?
I'm collecting NOS parts with a few upgrades from the original ...damn hard to find 30.4 seat post but I found a syncros NOS

Re:

Wow  thats a lot of elbow grease. Good on you. Definitely a labour of love working on old bikes. Interested to see how the bead blasting works out it will definitely give you a Matt finish. Have you thought of maybe doing a tinted clearcoat or peal like the original? An auto body shop could probably do it although I imagine it will cost you a couple of hundred to do. What's your build kit looking like? Mine is more of a work bike build. Pretty happy with it considering how much I have invested in it. The only things I might eventually change are the fork, brakes and wheel set. As far as a seat post goes I was lucky to find another member on here with a cromo Rocky Mountain one. Definitely snag that syncros if you can.
