Chainset/BB Question.

Today, I will be mostly wanting to buy a chainset. Before I'm off to the 'Wanted' section, a quick question. I want a chainset with proper sized rings, around 24-36-46 sort of size. Are there any measurements I can take on the frame to tell me the sort of cranks I need? I want to avoid having a very long BB axle. The frame was built (in the US) in 1993. The frame was completed in around 1996 so I have decided to combine whatever components I find from these years. I always was confused by the lo-profile name and things like BCD, what does it all mean?

Thanks as always.

M900 XTR BB between 110 and 113 depending on frame
110 BCD which means the size rings you are after.

M950/1 XTR - Octalink so low-profile. Axle length not an issue.

Alternatives
Middleburn RS3 (113mm BB) was available with 110 BCD.

Most high-end chainsets from this period are 110 BCD too - but you will find most of them need at least a 118mm axle.
