Can anyone recommend me a bike for the mother-in-law

Ok my mother in law is entering her first triathlon this year( in her mid 50`s as well) & I have been tasked with helping her choose a bike this weekend.
The only problem is I`m not too clued up on road bikes so if anyone has any suggestions it would be a great help
She has about £500 to spend, she wants something that wont "make her look stupid", by that I think she means doesn`t look too cheap & nasty, & it has to be from a shop in London as I`m only down for the weekend & she doesn`t have her own transport.

Thanks, Simon.

first thing that gets my notice is shop in london. london, expensive me thinks? wouldnt she get a better deal by going secong hand?

a guy I work with is doing one later this year, he's hirering his bike for the race and buying a cheapy bike to train on, that could be a better and a lot cheaper option considering at 50! it maybe her only one!

ps. dont tell I said that

You will not get much for £500 cash in any of the main London stores (they tend to be cycle surgery's or evans)

Second hand would be the way to go if you can.

You should really pick the bike by fitting. Get some recommendations for good shops and let them fit her to the bike. Without knowing her physiology, flexibility etc it would be impossible to say, sizing to the person is much more critical on a road bike than a mountain bike. A tri specifc store would be a good idea too if her intention is to compete for a while and adopt aero bars at some point. And I wouldn't worry too much about picking up a entry level model, they hold their value well and if she sticks at it and picks up a tri specific model in a few years it can be relegated to winter trainer.
