Help! Mavic Aksium Race 2010 cassette swap problem 10 speed 12-25 replaced with 11-36

Hi - I'm hoping someone can help. My son uses a 2010 Kona Jake the Snake for training, triathlon and long 'gravel' rides. We regularly maintain it swapping out old components for new as he wears them out but I currently have a problem and he has a 160k ride on Sunday.

He asked for more low gears if possible. The bike has 10 speed Shimano 105. So looking for options went for replacing the 105 rear mech with an RD-RX400 which is fine, and replacing the original CS-5600 12-25 cassette with a CS-HG50 11-36. All went together OK with a new Ultegra chain (CN-6701). Shifts Ok, however there is a creak coming from somewhere only under power. I think it is coming from the new rear cassette.

When I took the old cassette off the Aksium Race wheel hub there were two shims behind it. The one sitting against the hub is a plain 1mm shim. There was another 1.7mm shim that sat in a recess in the back of the old cassette. Comparing the two cassettes I could see that the new one had no recess in the back, it is filled in with a circular piece held in place with three rivets.

Thinking that I needed to maintain the offset I used just the 1mm shim and mounted the new HG50 against that. Set the bike up and then noticed the creaking under load. I thought about it and went back and looked at the shim I had left out. I noticed it was shaped to match a couple of the splines so it could only be mounted on the hub one way. I also noticed it had three indents on the shim face. When oriented the correct way round these recesses go over the slightly raised rivet heads on the back of the HG50 cassette. Clever!

I though this would resolve the problem. I swapped the shims over, assuming that the rivet heads on the back of the cassette must have been pressing on the other flat shim and causing it to sit incorrectly. However it still creaks. The 1.7mm shim sits flush against the back of the the cassette (with the rivet heads in the recesses) and flush against the inner edge of the hub, but I can see a tiny amount of play against the back of the hub.

I can't put both shims on as this brings the cassette out too far. The only thing I haven't tried is leaving both off, but I don't think this is correct. Does anyone have any ideas? I have tightened the lockring properly. Thanks for any help in advance.

Maybe needs another shim at the back. Not to distance it from the hub , but to pack it out. I assume it's a 11 speed freehub and you have a 10 speed cassette. Especially as you say there is some play.
Maybe I've misunderstood, it's difficult to grasp without seeing and playing

I wasn't sure if 11 speed was around in 2010, so I had assumed that it was 10 speed, but some articles on line say that the hub on the Aksium Race wheels was designed for 11, so a spacer was needed. However I think that the 1mm shim may be a Mavic spacer to use when fitting 10 speed Shimano cassettes, and the 1.75mm shim may be supplied by Shimano with some cassettes.

Anyway, what you say is worth doing as it is the only combination I haven't tried with the new cassette. I'll fit both shims and see what happens.
