burn me on a stake I've modernised my 94 lava dome

I ran the Clockwork with a Shimano cable disc brake up front for a winter season with a V brake out back

It works well & doesn't look too odd IMHO

I ran Hope C2 front/V rear for quite a long time too. Looked a bit untidy, but I had an odd left-hand Avid lever (can't remember the name) that had quite a long blade and was at least ergonomically similar to the Hope one. Adjusted the Speed Dial to give it similar "squoosh" the the Hope, it was fine.

To be honest I haven;t decided what to do about the rear disc, at the moment its just running a V brake. The rotor was just there as I couldn;t be bothered to take it off.

I'm tempted to have a disc tab brazed onto it

I wonder how much that would cost? And it would involve refinishing... And be a pain to reverse if at some point you wanted to... more refinishing...

But that would get the witch hunters going if nothing else did!

Some guys here have done it before (sometimes on frames where it maybe is sacrilegious), I expect somebody can chuck out a ball park figure for getting it done..?

It's probably what I would do, go all the way with it

Nice. I do like the look of it in the 2nd photo. Even with the mis-matched bits, modern rear mech, original (ace!) front mech, superfluous rear disc..... For some reason, it works for me.
Maybe cos it reminds me of what I started out with when I dug my old '94 lava dome frame out in 2008 and hung some random stuff off it to see wha it was like.... Then I discovered retrobike, had it re-sprayed and got hooked on period correct(ish) bling.
I do have a real itch to modernise it though.... Get a disc tab brazed-on and run a modern 100mm fork on it, but then I suppose it'd be very similar to my modern hardtail.
Anyway, I digress. Have you had a disc tab brazed-on? Argos racing cycles in Bristol do a fine job I hear.

On a different note, I priced up a rear disc mount at mercian cycles and they want around 70 quid, does this sound right ?

They want around £70 to braze the tab on, but afterwards it will need refinishing. And that paint job is gorgeous. Save your money; disc front and v rear is fine. I might even have a rear Magura knocking about which you can have for some monies.

If you do, may I suggest Edison's cycles in Alvaston? Much cheaper and friendlier than Mercian, with work at just as good a standard.

If you really want someone to annoy the collectors, wait until you see what's going to happen to my Peugeot Montana that's got a complete and hardly used first generation Deore XT groupset.

I'm going to like it more when it has a three speed hub and Maguras.

I run a mix of Magura HS33 front and V on the back. You don't need discs on the back for braking power.

I'm fully with chris667 on the paint. Mine is waaaay scruffier than yours and I don't want to repaint. It's probably the nicest colour Kona ever, especially with lots of black bits hanging off it 8) .

Just get out there and ride chap its only a kona
there are a good bunch of us on here from Derby and we ride every Tuesday night it you fancy joining us

I needed to post an update on this thread really. I've bought an onza rear disc mount for it rather than have a tab brazed on as like others have said its a nice paint job. Seems to work pretty well too, certainly out performs the v brake it replaced.

My next Idea its to respray the rebas in a gold colour and make stickers in the danged style as Judys . I.e make the reba look like a 95 judy. ......just concerned if i do that i might be lining myself up for a wickerman :-)

i will make it over to ticknall one Tuesday for a ride, just a bit difficult as my club tides are on a Tuesday night too.

Here's how she's looking at the moment, changed the wheels now it's running discs front and back and re-fitted the rebas but with the travel knocked down to 80mm. Have matching tyres on it now too!

She rides very nicely now, I'm just trying out different stem lengths. I found a 90mm felt a little short and th 120mm thats fitted now feels a bit long. Just need to get round to taking the 100mm one I've got on another bike off and fit that to try it out.

I know its a bit of a Marmite bike, some will love it others will hate it. I do agree that the rear mech doesn't suit the build though. IT was built for riding rather than looks though, so for the time being it's staying on. If I hadn't just sold the DX thumb shifters that came with it, I'd refit them along with the original LX rear mech and change it back to 7 speed.
