bike bags

Hilts and ededwards may be your guys to talk to as I believe they're quite well travelled.

I picked up a flight case,a hard shell jobby on the bay recently. I had my folks pick it up (rather handily it was in the village next to them)

When I went to collect it I realised it was so big it wouldnt fit in my car. I need a roof rack.

A plus side is that I can quite comfortably use it for accomodation in foreign lands, after using it to safely get my bike & possibly a 2nd to the destination.

I've had the predecessor (same mould, different catches) to this one for about 8 years now. It's been on about 30 return flights and is starting to look a little battered. But it still works, and my bike has never suffered any damage in it (that's scuppered me on the next trip, then).

If you have a place to keep it during your trip, then a hard case is definitely the way to go.

thanks for the quick replies guys.

will look into some available and hopefully can get a few more recommended here.

one other question, do I just rock on up to the ryanair desk with my bag? and will it come round the carrousel on arrival? (I cant imagine it would fit?)

there is no problems with storage, I work out in denmark during the week and have a place here

You should be OK to just turn up with it, but they may ask you to pay a bit of excess baggage. I try to email the airline ahead of time to let them know I'm bringing a bike.

It's been about 50/50 whether the hardcase comes out with the regular luggage on the carousel, or via the oversize route.

ok thanks, have booked it in online £40. but there wasnt any mention of what to do with it

When you arrive at the airport check in, they should have a record of you booking the bike in advance. They'll tag it up for you and then direct you to the oversize baggage check-in. Drag it over there and watch as it disappears through a huge metal detector. Wave goodbye and keep your fingers crossed.

At the other end it may come out on the carousel or a door may open in the baggage collection area and a shaved gorilla of a baggage handler will grunt as he drags your bike bag over to the relevant carousel.
You've really nothing to worry about...

I've flown back from Switzerland a couple of times with EasyJet after cycling out there. The great thing about Swiss airports from my experience is that you can buy a big cardboard bike box for about £12 from the check in desks. All you need to do is turn your bars 90 degrees and remove the pedals to fit an otherwise fully assembled bike in with room to spare. I removed my rear mech to be on the safe side and also shoved in a pair of panniers and a bar-bag too with no issues whatsoever.
My helmet was my only carry on luggage.
The only problem is what to do with the massive box at the other end.
