i loathe sat navs. I like maps and thought.
i do tend to get lost a fair bit mind.
I spent years, planning, writing routes. And not knowing many of the areas I was driving through, and not having a photographic memory, I often found the road signs had destinations or locations that didn't match with what I'd written on routes.
Now of course, you can stop, check the map and the route - or if you have a passenger, they can do it in real time, but for me, it was never really working out the route, it was the times when the road signs were more obfuscated than my lack of local knowledge could cater for.
These days, sat navs bridge that gap - now sure, that means most don't have to think about the route as much - and as a consequence, I find it does affect behaviour - I tend not to look at road maps any more - but in most instances, all I want to do, these days, is get to my destination, no fuss, no muss.
So whether it's dumbing down some things, or not - I couldn't care less - I find other areas to stretch my intellect, and I can let route planning and maps slide.
