Why bother getting one at all ? We all managed without them for years
this will no doubt spark a whole load of getting lost abuse, but...

i loathe sat navs. I like maps and thought.

i do tend to get lost a fair bit mind.
No abuse - just this point in counter.

I spent years, planning, writing routes. And not knowing many of the areas I was driving through, and not having a photographic memory, I often found the road signs had destinations or locations that didn't match with what I'd written on routes.

Now of course, you can stop, check the map and the route - or if you have a passenger, they can do it in real time, but for me, it was never really working out the route, it was the times when the road signs were more obfuscated than my lack of local knowledge could cater for.

These days, sat navs bridge that gap - now sure, that means most don't have to think about the route as much - and as a consequence, I find it does affect behaviour - I tend not to look at road maps any more - but in most instances, all I want to do, these days, is get to my destination, no fuss, no muss.

So whether it's dumbing down some things, or not - I couldn't care less - I find other areas to stretch my intellect, and I can let route planning and maps slide.

We hve a Garmin for use at work, and its bloody awful

I bought 2 tomtom ones, a sort of his n hers thing

And they are so simple and accurate, highly reccomended

(one is still sitting in its box , barely used and ready to sell, (shameless plug  ))

We did - myself included.

And we can look back all misty-eyed and say wasn't it great.

Hell no - it wasn't - it was rows in the car, stress and tension, when you're driving somewhere you've never been, with a car full, and kids crying, with the ever-so-expected "Are we there yet...".

Hahahaha! I remember the feeling well!

I remember the Mrs driving from Lincoln to Durham, me navigating via a map, we got straight there. Coming back, I drive and she navigates. 'When do we turn off the motorway love' I ask.......silence.......'Love??'......'Urm....'comes the reply 'I dont know??' I look and the map is shut.......

Unfortunatley i drive a truck 12 hours a day but thats a whole other issue, anyway i use a tom tom xl and the thing is marvelous, I totally depend on it rather than carrying a box of crusty old outdated maps around with me, once you get to know how it works and how to use it properly they are a godsend 8)

But as it goes, we all managed with rigid bikes and canti brakes, too. How's that with you - or is it just selective things you object too? Weren't you singing the praises of more modern things like disc brakes and suspension, a while back?

Yes, you're correct - it's just selective things that I object to. SatNav systems aren't on that list. Nor are rigid forks and canti brakes.

Hey, you opened the door to the whole "wasn't everything better BITD" argument.

What's the difference between somebody who decides to use sat navs over maps, to somebody who chooses to use discs and suspension over rigid and cantis?

Nothing.

I have a Garmin which is fine. But I just use the Nokia 5800 these days since I have it with me anyway and the maps are updated more often.
