August's MBR £100 challange - silly or a dig at 'retro'?

Not seen it, but sounds rather like the vid that some guy did where he bought a handful of BSOs, thrashed em to bits and concluded his £3k bike was sooo much better.
IIRC there was a thread up on here about it. Some thought it a pointless exercise, the anti BSO mob concurred with him.

Or the one where they pitted a modern £5k roadbike against an 80's machine and hey presto, the modern carbon machine was easier to ride.

This seems similar.

Isn't odd how magazines aren't popular amongst retro riders, but are amongst the riders who wouldn't be seen dead on anything from '09 let alone '99. Magazines are so inherently retro. Privateer aside, and that's more of a coffee table thing, who reads them? The net is often all you need.

I've been thinking for ages that a mountain bike magazine should do a retro challenge to see who can get the best bike for x amount compared to a modern one. However it would seem in this case that the riders were out to have a bash at the retro scene before they even started.

The mountain Mayheme(spelt wrong?) idea of using those 4 bikes and beating them is excellent and should be done.

Exactly. Maybe we should do a group test where we buy 3 paper magazines (including MBR) & one digital magazine.

We will then conclude that paper magazines are hopelessly outdated and are only good for towpaths and trail centres. ;) :)

What's a trail centre?

BB

A place frequented by overweight, middle aged people with very expensive modern full sus bikes go to get radical.

Sounds like the Blue Angel in Liverpool.

Only a different type of full suspenders of course...

If you dooo dooo the mountain mayhem thing, maybe ask them what they will be riding and get the exact equivalent from 20years ago (or xx years)
Or the closest thing (part for part)

Oh dear,

I love riding at trail centres and I'm none of the above, well, approaching middle age but not there yet. I've never ridden a full sus either.

If in order to be considered a member of the 'retrobike club' you have to not ride at trail centres, there's a lot of you missing out on some great trails. Shame.
