just had a flashback to when i used to read mtb mags 94-99 regular and recall seeing a regularly pitched ad for a frame only(i think) sale for 'extralite' a full suss frame which looked good, good reviews etc.i can remember thinking "that frame as a total bike would be the daddy!"
many tonnes of water has flowed under the bridge since then....to this day
ive never seen one in the flesh or on here!
anybody had, seen,or even remember the same thing?extralite?
8) i shall wait(patiently).

Extralight were an Italian boutiquey manufacturer of vry light, very expensive bikes and components of dubious durability. It's not surprising you haven't seen them in a while.... :P

No mate, those are 2 different things. He means this: www.extralite.com.
Super cool parts. Have bunch of those on my Scott Ransom & wife's Spesh Epic FSR.

The FS frame is effectively an AMP derivative.

Very light Italian frames and kit, got good reviews.

I'm sorry I can't do better than this jpeg ATM, but my so-called scanner is pretty bad. It is from Mountain Biker International October 1999. I could try and scan the entire test if you're desperate, but my scanner produces gigantic images of miniscule quality.

Dubious is right according to the one friend of mine who I know rode them BiTD. He reckoned they were basically very much 'for racing only' as the Yetis would say, taking them into the wilds of mid-Wales just resulted in a lot of bent metal and cursing.

They still produce high quality products. Here is the range

http://www.extralite.com/index_euro.htm

Concerning durability, Extralight components are like Tune or FRM: very, very light stuff. They are made for xc use. There are some components which are quite relaible, namely the crankset, the barends and the headset. I heard rave reviews about the wheels but I wouldn't buy a pair (and I am an xc rider). PMP products, to remain in Italy, offer more reliability ( they are heavier obviously).

The stem gives me the creeps (95 grams on average) and the grips rotate on the bar

I don't think the brakes actually... brake, to be honest, 64 grams for the levers and 99 grams for the brakes. I tried a pair of KCNC (chaper copies of Extralite) and they simply didn't work.

I wouldn't buy a frame, either ( I saw a cracked one). I wouldn't trust one with more than one season behind.

I mean, if you are a weight weenie Extralite represent a good compromise, not too cheesy and very light. Bloody expensive, tho: look at the price list:

99 Euros for a pair of barends!
