The boy's PS3 has got the YLOD and is knackered......

I'm going to attempt to 'reflow' the motherboard tonight.......very blooming daunting! Ive got to strip it down to nothing and apply a heat gun to the board and re-apply heat sink.........I know I sound like I know what I'm talking about, but I have no clue apart from the wonderful internet!!!

Wish me luck!

I did one.
Stripped to MB, tin foil sheild, heat gun.
It worked but didn't last very long, about 20 hrs of use and it went again. I used a probe thermometer and left small weights on the chips as it cooled. This issue i thunk is the expansion and contraction of the MB as it cools.

To be permanent it needs to be re-balled, preferably with leaded solder (bloody h&s) with a jig to hold the MB. I did't find anyone to do this, sold mine as spares and bought another one S/H.

At the time Sony would swap it, and #120, for another 60gb or a slim.

When i suffered the ylod i dropped mine in at a shop who fixed & guaranteed
The work for 6 months , paid £60 for this service

It lasted a week & i got my money back!

My advice would be to sell it on ebay as an unopened one
And let somebody else do the repair, you will get more for it this way than in a fornights time when it goes & does it again

yeah, it sux, I wanna play!!

But I think zI'll be doing what people say, the broken one will go on ebay for whatever I can get and get a new 360Gb one...

... but how to get data off the HD? :(

I think I'll contact Sony first as it is the 60gig one and I'd like to keep hold of it......
I've heard about reballing, but who does that?

I think mine went I'd go down the Sony route. Atleast then it'd be done properly. Saying that, there's no harm in trying it yourself if Sony don't mind when they take it in px. Does look a pain to strip down though, there's a lot to remove!

So.... I've stripped it and cleaned all the crap out and just reckless the first side of the mother board..... I'm waiting for it to cool!
I managed to remove the 'void' label without it showing, so I'll be able to stick it back when I've done if I want to go down the Sony route..... Thing is, I would rather pay an extra £60 or so to get him a new one, as opposed to a recon unit that has been repaired....... We'll see how this goes....

Updates to follow!!!
