an old singlespeed chestnut

Don't worry MJN, I use Hollowtech bearings with my bullseye cranks - it is an old idea shimano stole from them... making it almost as retro as square taper.

Well i can vouch for halflink chains being a waste of time. 25 miles and its stretched, although not enough to take another link out. Wonder if i can get my money back?

Unless you go for a heavy duty Track chain most will strech, just not as fast/much as a half link
On a slightly different subject, does it need any modification to make Bullseyes work with Hollowtech bb cups The Ken?

I use shims that GilM sold me. He might have some left.

You might want to try it first to make sure you have enough clearance - it is very tight on my xizang as the bullseyes could do with being about 5 mm wider.

The other alternative for Pace owners is to get Dr S to skim them down by 0.008 of an inch as that means you can use press fit metric bearings.

No worries,if I get that far I'll tap Gil up for some sizes,I work in an engineering/manufacturing workshop so either option is doable :)

Late to the party as usual but just thought that I'd mention that chains don't actually stretch, rather the rollers and plates get worn and so the chain gets longer. Pedantic point maybe but figured it's worth making.

The bit about chainrings and sprockets not being perfectly round is a good one, not really an issue if you are using a tensioner but can be one if using horizontal ends or an EBB or hub. In those case, if the aforementioned 'tapping' technique doesn't work (and I've not managed it) then best to make sure that the chain doesn't get close to binding at the tightest point. I've had a good half inch deflection at most and the chain won't derail provided you've got a decent chainline and the chainrings and sproket don't have teeth worn down to nubs.

The madness continues - I'm just about to build an ss cross bike!

And if i may increase the pedance two fold , I said "stretch" in lew of the better word "wear" as half link chains are comprised of angled plates that do pull straight so stretch is the better word for those . But yes normal chains wear and elongate .

You win, go and sit in Pedant's Corner!
