Your cranks may spin 2 revs with the correct tension but that relys on the bb you use,I'm on hollowtech 2's so that's not gonna happen, they won't spin 2 revs without a chain on!Good tip otherwise though :D

Ah, i did'nt know that :) , i'm using a standard Shimano square taper job.

Half link chains are a waste of money IMO. They stretch alarmingly after a few rides. Get a SS specific conventional chain.

Tight and slack points on the chain can also be due to how perfectly centred the chainring is. Very few chainrings are such a perfect fit and so perfectly made that all points are equidistant from the centre.

Loosen all the chainring bolts and see if there is any sideways give, if there is you might be able to centre it better by rotating and gently tap the ring around the circumference before retightening the bolts. Fiddly painful business that probably won't solve anything but its an idea

Another idea told to me which I accept works is a wide 1/8th" pitch chain used by BMX on narrow 3/32nd" pitch rings allows for imperfect chain line by a wee bit and BMX chain is SS specific so has little latteral flex thus less likely to jump off.

Can someone enlighten me - what is the Magic Ratio

It's when you get lucky with chainstay length and gear ratios and dont need to run a tensioner or any kind of adjustment like eccentric hubs, BB's or special chains, my setup is not ideal as a new chain is is initialy tight for a wee while but i'm willing to put up with it.
