A couple of questions about spokes...

Firstly, what's a normal or more recommended pattern? 2 cross or 3 cross?

Secondly, I used the lenni spoke calculator and it gives the length of spokes in .1s of mm - do you round up to the nearest 2mm or just go to the nearest available length?

Thanks in advance!

I use Sonic Cycles for most of my wheelbuilding, and Helmut Berns always recommended I went for 3-cross both back and front for strength & reliability.

3x but I am a big boy.

If you are XC riding I guess you have options.

"Rounding spoke lengths

Use the spoke length shown at 1 decimal place to base your selection on. You can go +/- 1mm from the specified figure to find a suitable length.

For example with 263.6 you have a range starting at 262.6 going up to 264.6. This gives you the options of 263 or 264. You cannot use 262 because that is greater than 1mm (1.6mm). The ideal length is 264 because that is closer to the theoretical length but the 263 is still an okay choice."

Round up....but beware not all spoke calcs give exactly what you need. And 2mm CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE when trying to dish a rim over. ie things will either be too loose or too tight one side if you 2mm out.

Cheers chaps!

Also what does this mean and do I have to worry about it?

ERD is Nipple Seat Dia + 3mm for nipples

Effective rim diameter - obviously this varies on how 'deep' the rims are.

And the other bits are to allow for the nipple length and seating 'offset' to be calculated in.

This.

From what I have read, some of these calculators are inaccurate.

My grandfather used to say, measure twice cut once. He was a gender reassignment surgeon.

So based on the Edd calculator info, the spokes I need are as follows...

Rear - 267.7 = 268 and 265.9 = 266

But what about the front?

Front - 268.4 = 268 or 270?
