80 Miles Per Hour on British motorways?

I started 1 mile from the M56 then M6, M5 and A30 with no stops.
Most of the A30 is national speed limit. It's also not 350 miles from door to door.

So I would say my average speed was way below 70mph.

I have never had points on my licence and have never been stopped whilst driving.

al.

You've lost me. It's 195 miles from Penzance to Bristol, and 155 miles from Bristol to the M56. I'm only mentioning it because I drive both ways often from here. 4.5 hours doesn't add up to an average speed being 'way below 70mph', even if it was 100% motorway. Add an hour on and maybe...

That's pretty much the reason why I know how far it is time wise, I'll get an ear-clipping if I drive too fast or if we take too long.

Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em... :D

One aspect of all this that seems to have been ignored so far is that the posted speed limit of any given stretch of road is the maximum speed limit, not the minimum!

Having said that, the ACPO guidelines regarding speeding is to allow 10% + 2mph so technically the speed limit on motorways is already 79mph anyway; upping the limit to 80mph just means you can legally get away with 91mph...

As I have mentioned before, my vehicle is chipped/restricted to 68mph - it simply will not go any faster than that - but I can safely say I pass at least two thirds of other motorway/dual carriageway traffic. Up to 60mph (well, 50mph for my catagory of vehicle actually  ) it makes no difference.

Personally I'd like to see ALL vehicles restricted - it makes you a better driver because you have to think about what you're doing and plan ahead instead of blindly putting your foot down and going like a bat out of hell...

...and how much time do you save by driving like a complete knob and upsetting everyone around you?

NONE!

I regularly used to average around eighty over my journey from the top of the land to London town, stopping once for fuel and a pee.

One or two of my friends used to average the same.

Can't say I am too worried about plod knocking down my door to take me in.

Locally it is common knowledge that the bobbies are not interested if you are driving with respect for limitations of visibility, machine, etc.

I do have a spent speeding conviction. The good policemen of Tain had me on tape and played it back to me in the car. They decided to charge me with 96. I had initially been knocking 130, but they only got me into their sights by the time I had slowed down.

I explained I was checking my new tyres were all balanced, etc. as I was travelling back to the continent. They were perfectly happy to allow me some slack as the road was empty and visibility was a mile or so ahead and hundreds of yards to each side.

They are not a bad lot.

80mph is enough on uk roads, they are bad enough at 60!

germany was ace, loved driving there, day trip to switzerland was shorter than expected thanks to cruise control sat at this speed in my little volvo....

as for modern cars, like mentioned, you often lose that sense of speed........i thought i was doing 70-80mph round a bend at kielder forest a few years back, until the back end went......i was then told the speedo was reading 110mph when it went  some how i managed to keep it on 4 wheels as it span and took out bollards for quite a distance before ending up 100 metres into the forest......
