80 Miles Per Hour on British motorways?

Daytime headlights! Another of my pet hates!

SWMBO is always nagging me to put the effing headlights on when she's in the car with me - I say 'See that parked car up there?' barely within view...

She says 'Yes, and?'

'That hasn't got any effing lights on and you can see that!'

Drivers who put their headlights on at the first spot of drizzle, thus reducing all visibility to a glare whereas if they left their lights off we'd be able to see the actual traffic!

And as for the t*ssers who flash their lights at me just because it's five o'clock rush hour and I haven't got mine on - because I'm driving into the fricking sun wearing sunglasses!! :x

Best reply so far by far is Magsy's above... 8)

All new cars have to have daytime running lights fitted at manufacture now, according to Spacecore directive 164. You don't have to use them, but they have to be installed now.
Courtesy car Audi I had once, had quite a deep menu delve to get to the setting that switched them off.

They're sidelights though, not the headlight.
Volvo and other similar northern manufacturers have had them on all the time for many a years now.

Problem is, many implementations of DRLs are dipped beam headlights.

And with those on permanently, it can cause glare and issues - possibly accidents in their own right - but I suspect that there's been precious little stats analysis to support that.

Original DRLs - so lower powered than dipped beam - possibly around sidelight power, I don't have a problem with - truth be told, perhaps I'm a bit ambivalent to - but all the same, it doesn't offend my sensibilities. But permanent dipped headlights? That's simply overkill, sledgehammer to crack a nut.

If a car needs lights to be seen (and I'm not convinced of that, but I accept that in some circumstances, and for some people, it makes them more noticable) then low powered lights should be sufficient. Dipped beams should only be needed when you need them to see the road or other objects.

The problem is, though, that it's become brinksmanship, both with DRL implementations, and more powerful dipped headlight units (HIDs) - it's almost like the nuke scenario - they have theirs, so others need 'em to.

Fortunately, not all marques are using dipped headlights as DRLs, but I suspect that's just a matter of time, and stupidity - 'cos there's a certain inevitability to it all.

All of which further absolves the driver of any inkling of responsibility for their own appalling lack of concentration and roadcraft...

...'He didn't have his lights on!'

'Ooh! Tut, tut, tut; go straight to jail, do not pass go, do not collect...'

PS: Talking of roadcraft (as in driving like a Plod), I do this all the time and it has literally saved my life more than once.

Recently, however, I was driving along a winding A road down to the south coast when the driver behind me flashed his headlights at me several times over the course of a few miles.

As luck would have it we came to a long tail-back from some roadworks so I got out of my van and did a quick visual to check there wasn't a problem. Finding nothing I walked back to the vehicle behind and tapped on his window, motioning for him to lower it - bearing in mind I was in uniform so it intimidates the Hell out of people anyway ( ) - when I asked him '...and just what seems to be the problem Sir?' I could have quite happily hauled out from behind the wheel and battered him! :x

'You were all over the road back there - you ought to try putting your phone down while you're driving...'

...at which point he no doubt noticed the Bluetooth headset which is permanently screwed into my right ear!

To my eternal credit I just shook my head and walked away...

Must have been the booze, then?
