I'm thinking its a mid season. its also got downtube cables. Which points to 1996 with a dog collar but its clearly in 1997 paint/decals/forks in the catalogue .
and as for quality level.. check out the m950 XTR rear mech in the brochure
My lavadome is identical senario in that year. its all 1996 bar the paint which is 1997.

Yep, You could be right. I had one of these year's ago and it also had the gear's along the down tube but it had the rear
brake cable stop for v's as well
I remember several '98 Pahoehoe frames coming into the shop I was working in bitd and they were also missing the rear brake
cable stop's...in '98!
We had a hell of a time selling them as v's were all the rage and there wasn't any problem solver's back then (that I can remember)!
