1996 Stevens 7.6.2. Comp (1991 Koga-Miyata Terraliner Carbolite)

I've made some changes to the cockpit

Call me Ritchey Fanboy but it all makes sense 😉: The original star nut was crooked and somehow I've managed to install the new one crooked as well, so got rid of it. The stem was the only reasonable one I've found with the right rise and the bars and grips are crazy cheap compared to Surly, Jones, etc. not to mention Nitto. There aren’t silver ahead stems with 30° anyway. I’ve removed the ugly grey stripes and lettering with thinner in the meantime.

A new fd-651 front derailleur is already in the mail hopefully. It’s a bit hard to manoeuvre the bike through the door now 🤭 but for now the 800 mm don’t feel wrong, if so I’ll trim them 2 cm on each side. The new chainguard is two teeth smaller than recommended but doesn’t interfere with the derailleur cage anymore (and looks better as well). 44 teeth have proven to be useful so chainrings won’t be changed.

Finally I’ve some XTR levers on my watchlist, will see if I can grab them otherwise DXR, but haven’t found a shop yet that has them in stock.

New derailleur day :) The old XT wasn’t only worn out, bent or meant for smaller seat tube angles as well. Also the first longer ride today with the Ritchey Kyote and the 800 mm feel spot-on. The DXR levers are just polished M510 Deore what puts me off somehow and for that totally overpriced. Will have to look out for an alternative 🧐

As mentioned before I want to get rid of my rear panniers/racks and in addition to the saddle bag, I need a handlebar bag for my other bike (plus the frame bag of my third) so I can easily swap racks in case I should need more room for luggage. Klick-fix adaptors are plain ugly and take the room you need for computers, etc.

There aren’t many front racks on the market and the nice ones (Nitto) are more than 100 $$$ (if they are in stock). I stumbled over this one from RFR, a divison of Cube bikes as far as I know. Only 14 € and what caught my eye, were the two holes in the rear.

I guess these are meant for bolting on a basket but could also be used for a decaleur hack like this one:

I didn’t want the holder mounted to the bars, but liked the idea of using Ortlieb rails and some Tubus small parts. Tubus stays are solid material but I’ve found some 8 mm tubes instead in the DIY. I didn’t manage a 180° bend at the bottom (to keep left/right from moving in different directions) with my poor tooling but so far I’m quite happy with the outcome :)

Finally I’ve bought a tool for bending pipes for another 14 € and the main job was done in 5 minutes

Still room for improvement, but full adjust ability given in every direction needed. There is an alu bar sewn-in the rear of the bag I bolted the rail to and the joint is sturdy

When I thought it over it would have been much simpler to bolt two l-shaped pipes to the bag as seen above and slide them into the Tubus thingy like a classic decaleur 🤔

Love your thread reindeer. What an antidote to just blowing a couple of thousand on the latest
carbon gravel rocket. You have given me some ideas for a project. This means another bike in the garage!
Your thread is the reason I inhabit this forum, Thanks.

Thanks for the kind words and sorry I didn’t reply, I have notifications turned off 🙉

Repaint postponed to fall but some other changes: Audax bag has moved on to the Vaya, but I’ve ordered a zipped roll for the saddle and better weight distribution (folding lock, tools, ...). So I’ve bent a second "decaleur" for the Stevens to share the front bag with the bike-tech. Therefore had to change the brakes to M770, M739 parallelograms interfering with the rack. Tufo Tires have moved on to the bike-tech and I’ve mounted the old compass 44 mm slicks from the Vaya. Replaced the M700 thumbies with SL-BS50 👈👇👆👉
