1996 Gekko Gecko

TomT

Retro Newbie
Presenting my orange Gekko Gecko. Built by Norwegian Sykkeldelisk in 1996, found hurt, abandoned and torn to piececes. After 3 months at the local police and no one collecting it, it's mine to keep.

Frame: CR-MO, Fuji stout-light
Rear derailleur: Shimano XT, M737 (Not M739 mentioned before)
Front derailleur: Shimano XT
Shifters: Shimano XT, M739
Saddle post: Shimano XTR
Rims: Mavic X517 SUP
Brakes: Shimano LX, V-brakes

Very hard to get information but I've been told by Anton sport, current owner of the brand Gekko that it was a bike built for weekend warriors towards competitive. As I understand, it's pretty much original except from the pedals and tires.
One sticker says Troy Lee design.
Grateful if anyone has more information to share regarding my new ride. Comments and suggestions what to use it for are also appreciated. Do I restore it or what would you du?

Hi mate.

First of all: the bike does not have an original set up. Almost everything is different parts from different year that does'nt match together (if you want a period correct build).
My second real mtb was a Gekko Gecko 1995 model bought at Sykkeldelisk. It was red, with complete xt, rock shox judy and white tires.
I do think the frame is mid range and quite good quality and performance for its price. I sure loved mine.

Hello kaos,

Thanks for the reply and info! Do you have any idea if Sykkeldelisk mass produced the bikes, only made them in small series or perhaps even custom? Why I wonder is because of the different year and price level of the Shimano components. Please note I'm only guessing from pictures I've seen that the shifters are M739. The rear derailleur is marked with M737 so there is no doubt there.
Speaking of price: do you remember kaos what you payed for your Gecko?

Haven't ridden it much yet but the size fits me perfect. Same size as my Medium sized Scott Scale but completely different positioning when riding. The Gecko feels more like a bmx.

Not custom. I believe mass produced in sort of a small scale for Sykkeldelisk. I guess the bikes were delivered complete. The xt components got to be the only original parts on your bike. I think i payed 8000nok, maybe the retail price was 10 or 12000nok.

Posting a final picture before I put up for sale. Thank you for watching! I wish you best of luck with your rides.
