1995 Vario No Limit downhill prototype

So a little different from my previous retro builds…

I’m still not 100% sure why, but back in the day I always liked the almost agricultural look of the 97 Vario No Limit downhill bike where it was purely a bike built for function over aesthetics. The Vario No Limit was a very rare bike back in the day due to a very small production line and even more so with the earlier 94/95 models. Over the past few years I've been casually looking for one when a few months ago a not overly great advertised early 1995 Vario No Limit full build popped up and after rolling the dice considering the photos weren’t all that detailed I put in an offer that got accepted.

After around a month the bike arrived and the risk seemed to have paid off as apart from a bit of mud it looked pretty much unused and had some nice and some parts I wasn’t overly familiar with in the retro world.

After doing some research on the bike and after liaising with a former Vario employee who remembered building this very frame it transpired that this frame was a prototype that was from his memory a 1 of 1 prototype with the Hope disc only rear end and other subtle differences over the production version including finish quality, frame reinforcements and was again from memory only ridden for a magazine test for one day and then spent the rest of its life on display and then in storage for 25 years that would explain the very minimal wear on the bike/components.

Nice, always a fan of Vario dh bikes myself too. I think i have a Vario catalogue somewhere still.

So one area of the original build that I really didn’t know anything about was the SPRING suspension. After doing some research I originally thought that SPRING were a small German suspension company that were around during the 90’s, however the very helpful RB member @joglo pointed me to an advert stating that SPRING were in fact of Italian origin and were produced by Motoquality Italy.

The SPRING VLS (Variable Length System) forks were their downhill variant in 1995 with around 3” of travel. The Variable Length System (VLS) was quite an interesting and out there design whereby the wheelbase could be adjusted in order to fine tune the bike for different riders/tracks. The forks are oil damped and I believe coil sprung, but I haven’t looked at them closely yet.

These forks function perfectly and have no leaks whatsoever 👍

…the rear coil shock is also manufactured by SPRING and was way ahead of its time with a remote reservoir and motorsport like anodised hose fittings.

After doing a bit of research on this suspension company they manufactured very similar custom shocks for a number of high profile factory road racing teams in the mid 90’s for their Paris-Roubaix race bikes.

What I loved with this frame was that it had specific mountings for this shocks remote reservoir.

This shock functions perfectly and has no leaks whatsoever 👍

Yep, that’s incredibly agricultural… looks like someone chopped up a plough, threw some wheels and bars on it and painted it JCB yellow! 😂
So ironically the founder of Vario Bikes owned a plant manufacturing company, so I believe the first prototypes were built using materials available within this manufacturing facility.

At present I am not 100% sure on how I am going to build this bike up, but I’m thinking of doing a Francois Dola inspired homage race bike from when he was battling against and beating the Sunn, GT and Cannondale riders on board his Vario No Limit.

I plan on keeping the Spring suspension, but I do have a pair of green 1995 Marzocchi DH3 forks as another period correct fork option.

Component wise it will be kept period correct, but will be swapping out a few parts in order to make it a bit more of a “factory” style race bike.

I plan on keeping the 2nd generation Hope rear cable disc and I do have a matching front that I may or may not use.

The images below were shared to me personally by photographic legend Geoff Waugh

More thread updates to follow as parts are sourced and/or progress is made with the build 👍
