I know this is an old post from a few years ago, but I just found it. I'm doing an ARC paint restoration and was doing some research and found your posting. The paint scheme that I'm planning is what you did. If you got the time, I got a couple of questions for you.

- Where did you get the paint done at?
*I'm stateside here in the US.

- What RAL color is that grey?

- The turquoise is RAL 5018 right?

Hi Buddy

You have great taste in Retro steeds :D and whilst I love the Turquoise and Yellow colour way, the less blingy Grey/Turquoise is a great choice for the earlier ones especially if you go with Manitou's rather Judys like me :facepalm:

I've been told the grey is RAL 7036 although I got mine wrong and went with 7040 but its so close its not noticeable unless you had two side by side.

Check out page two of this thread, Ridevintage and Martin (mkozaczek ) are the go two guys for all thing Yeti and answered my request for clarification on RAL codes when in the same position, I believe they would/have used a US company called Spectrum who are world renowned for their paint.

Martin runs his own company "secondspin" and specialises in restoration and a proper top bloke, and Mike knows most of the guys who worked for Yeti during the Durango period... So you've come to the right place for knowledgeable help.

During my search for colour codes I came across this gem (below) from way back when, which has the colour swatch on it for Desert Turquoise (RAL code 501:cool: and universally accepted as the being the colour that John Parker used on the team bikes, http://yetifan.com/YETI_PAST/yeti_past.html

You've probably found it already but check out the ARC build Silverfish did also in Grey/Turquoise but done to whole different (period correct) level.

Thanks a lot!!!! Your reply with details help out a lot! For whatever reason, no one puts the details/info of the paint. I heard about the turquoise, but I just wanted to confirm with someone who actually used the color. As for the grey, I was trying to match the grey in the pic attached. Your grey (the lighter shade) is more of what I was attempting to match.

- Did the originals have the speckled metal flake in the paint like yours?

Oh yeah. I'm familiar with Martin and Second Spin Cycles. I'm a fan and follower of the website. His restorations are immaculate showpieces. Your bike is in the same category.

I've seen Silverfish's frame while doing a web search, but didn't know the pics were from this forum. There were no links.

To be honest I don't know the answer to that one ^^ I suspect they didn't, they were after all just a tool to do a job with, and not intended to court punters into opening their wallets.
Having seen the grey on a sample tube the shop sprayed up I was (if I'm honest) more than a little underwhelmed with what looked like "Battleship Grey" and seriously considered going down the road of Yellow and Turquoise.

The Garry in the paint shop (Argos in Bristol) talked me round by convincing me into having a very subtle metallic flake on top, which they'd apply at the clear coat stage, I obviously was totally won over as they told me to wait a week and they'd do me a sample (as seen below)


The clear coat flake was only applied to the Grey areas and no where else prior to the graphics being applied which is cool as I didn't want to change the shade of the black darts or Turquoise by lifting them with a silver flake, and then the whole frame was clear coated with a proper clear (clear) coat.

The decals are a mixture of Velocals.com and from Gil a forum member on here who does very impressive reproductions,
including the period correct hand made in Durango decal,



Your frame is in much better shape than mine was, the original paint on mine was so battle scarred and faded I wished it could talk ....would have had more than a few good war stories to tell. :LOL:

Thanks Spud, but not my frame. It was a pic I found of a grey from an original frame. My frame is more of a mid/late 90's and had some cracks. I finally got it fix by 'the Man' (FTW) and now looking to get it re-done.

Hi all,

The Yeti ARC "grey" isn't paint or powder. It's the raw material that's been beadblasted and then clearcoated. The "flake" that you're referring to is the metal coming through. Too hard of a beadblast = too much flake = too sparkly. The Pro FROs that were grey were powder coated, although I'm not sure what color.

I totally spaced and forgot to ask you the simplest question. Where did you get your frame painted at? Was it here in the US?

I'm having some difficulty find the confidence in selecting a vendor. My 1st choice was SpectrumPowderworks, but they sold the bike painting part to another place. I don't know if the painters moved to the new place or what, but they only do car stuff. My 2nd option was Maas Brothers in the Bay area, but they only do walk-in work and don't do any sort of packing/mailing. My 3rd option is to send it up North to Canada. I've got a buddy who got his ARC done up there by a well known guy. But it wasn't powder coated. I rather keep it stateside. Please let me know. Thanks in advance!!!

Thanks Mike/ridevintagemtb for the info. That's the same info I found out from another source. I would have responded sooner, but work is keeping me busy. :(

I see you fitted polished speed traps at some point? are they signed on the end or do they have grafton decals as there seems a few variations were about, mine are signed under the clear coat....
Would love to see a pic or two of them :cool:
