1993 KHS Montana Pro, virtually catalogue spec :D

Break out the celebratory cake

The BB is out 8)

Thank funk for that!

Installed a new UN54 whilst I hunt down something lighter than a small planet to replace it with.

The build can continue & the hunt for those elusive long inner chainring bolts for the M730 cranks continues......

Is 13mm long enough Andy?
Must....

...resist....

...innuendo....

Dunno, I've bought em anyway & will find out, cheers Chris 8)

Just done a final mock up with a 2 x 7spd set up as I'm awaiting delivery of the inner bolts I just ordered

Weight @ 23.6lb without pedals

No pics until she's stripped down and thoroughly cleaned ;)

Indeed, pretty lightweight, especially considering the total build cost of ~£400

Reckon with modern XT pedals & inner chainring it'll be about 24.5lb

We do have some very nice lightweight Xpedo SPD's @ work 275g, compared to XT's @ 352g, might just have to try them ;)

I have now fitted the inner chainring and a pair of SPD pedals, the KHS is ready to ride!

Only one teaser of a pic as I now need to get polishing her up before doing proper photo's

Ready to ride weight of 24.41lbs/11.07Kg

Just to rub it in the bike looks awesome, but you lot will have to wait to see it all nice and shiny ;)

Huge thanks to those who helped me build this bike in five weeks!

Here's how it all happened, are you sitting comfortably?

Right then here we go...

...my plan was to return the KHS to as close to catalogue spec as possible (the forks are staying as my wrists & back would kill me with a full rigid fork!)

....Firstly thanks to Lewis1641 for starting me off on my 1st proper retro build by supplying me with the bike as seen on page 1 of this thread as well as the M095 shifters and pods.

I got real lucky with the saddle as it was hung up at work just waiting for this build. I had noticed it, but had no idea until Fluffychicken & Lewis 1641's topic with the '93 KHS catalogue in it that this was the saddle for this bike!

Ebay also came up with the goods just as I needed them, a NOS Kalloy Uno seatpost from '94, again a perfect catalogue spec match

Then the M730 cranks popped up on here & Sithlord worked his black magic on them & polished them up to a mirror shine. He did say that he hadn't really finished them to his liking, but to me they look awesome!

Then the DX wheelset also popped up on here (thanks wadsy), apologies to whoever I beat to those, they may be back up for sale when the M730/M732 wheelset arrives! Due to my impatience I asked for them to be delivered ASAP, during the week between Xmas & New Year, 4th time lucky for the delivery man with those!

Are you bored of reading this yet? No? Ok I'll carry on lol...

...Sithlord also provided me with the chainrings, sorry for making you go to the post office several times, I really must get my shit together when building a bike, but you learn something new everyday, I learnt that M730 cranks need granny ring spacers & the Sith once again provided (where he hell does he keep all this stuff...)

Then I had to source the longer inner chainring bolts for the cranks, Chris V40 came up with a link to some from ebay, think they are listed on Rotec Cycles ebay page as dirt jump bash guard chain ring bolts. Anyhoo, they're 13mm long M8 x .075, they work perfectly!

I then bought a M735 SGS rear mech from garyturner, which was usable but in need of a good scrub up, then another one popped up in the for sale section, in great condition, so I quickly grabbed it (thanks again mynchiboy!)

Again lady luck was with me as the Postie decided that the best place to leave my nicely packaged M735 rear mech was hanging out of my letterbox...

Finally yet again the forum came up with the goods, this time a pair of XT skewers from the good ol' U S of A (en route as I type), and the M730/M732 wheelset which is also en route to my grubby little mancave!

Thanks for reading my epic tale of a 1st 'true' Retrobike project, hope you didn't die of boredom reading all of this

Can't wait to get this bike out on the trails

That looks so so good andy. I never weighed it properly when i had it which is a shame. I hope you enjoy it as much as i did and also hope you'll let me have a reunion ride.

When i get the team geared up it'll be a nice comparison. Different sizes and forks. As far as i know frame spec is the same.

I would never have attempted white cables on there but they work really really well- good vision.

I feel a bit wierd looking at this. I loved that frame and didn't want to let it go but needed to fund the team. It's kinda like seeing your ex out with her new fella!

Once again andy, a great first retro build. Can't wait to see it polished. Then see it filthy.

Thanks Dave, it's all your fault lol!

You can have a ride of the KHS any time you like

The sneaky peak pic I sent you certainly does not do it justice, hopefully the next set of pics I provide will do it justice ;)

I think I have found a good location to take the pics too 8)

As I'm not a big fan of ano (yeah shock horror, no ano on a retrobike!), I usually highlight a bike with just the cable colour, eg silver weave Goodridge cables on the Clockwork to match the logos & as the logos on the KHS are predominantly white I went for white cabling, I could have gone with the pink highlights from the logo, but decided against it, pink's not really my colour
