1993 Fat Chance Buckshaver

Hmmm… bit of an issue. I went for a 122mm bb on the RS2s… however now that they’re fitted, I’m beginning to think I might have made a mistake.. maybe 127mm would have been safer.. I reckon I only have 2mm clearance between the granny and the chainstay.

Thoughts? Too tight?
It is on the tight side, but I don´t think you´d be able to make the chainrings touch the stays. Well at least I couldn´t with my storch legs😂. How´s the chainline though? IIRC it should be between 45 and 47 mm from the middle of the seat tube to the middle chainring.

Haven’t measured actually. Will do later. Was hoping to finish her today but my build has ground to a halt for the most prosaic of reasons. I’ve run out of gear cable ends. Why on earth does shimano insist on providing only two per pack? The net additional cost of a handful must be nearly zero.

The bike isn’t going to be doing hard miles (can’t quite bring myself to trust a nearly 30 year old set of Manitous holding together blasting down a hill!) so I don’t see myself cranking as hard as I can - but still. Even if I never ride the bike at all, it will annoy me every time I look at it if I know something isn’t quite right.

Grello always looks great. Pure early 90s neon rave vibes. Nicely set off with the turq parts. All the FAT models ride differently but nice. They really understood how subtle geometry tweaks and varied tubing gauges tuned the ride. The chainset doesnt look too far off to my eye. 🤔 127mm is wide and best suited to Cook Bros RSRs. If it starts chain sucking shave off any teeth burrs and maybe go slightly wider BB. You could also put a smaller inner ring 24T on maybe. Manitou forks are very solid at speed. Had mine upto mid 50s MPH bitd descending in Wales. FATs are nice and stable on high speed descents.

The brace on the fork flexes worryingly, just by pulling on the brakes, stationary!

Might stick a smaller granny on. It won’t actually be used, just for aesthetics (and my OCD about the whole bike actually working properly!)

Maybe you are able to do that ‘stationary’ with those longer length levers but you wont so much on the fly. Mani 3 forks are pretty stiff and i aint no 9st weakling 😂 If you are some arm wrestling freak then 🙌🏼

Got to confess to being ocd too when it comes to such details. Nowt wrong with using all the gears and spinning up steep gravelly hills.

No granny ring snobbery here. The previous owner of the middleburns selected ring sizes that Kamikaze champions would have struggled to turn. The granny will probably be used as a middle ring 😂

Looking nice

The chainrings don't look too bad to me either.

I have a USE post that may be spare that would look good on that :)

Ha - Which I bet you’ll sell it to me at an extra special, very good price!

Thanks - will think about it. I have a nos blue x-lite ze which I could put on.. but I have a funny thing about using NOS on a rider. I tend to use NOS exclusively on NOS frames or full resprays. Basically bikes I won’t ride. Prefer mint parts for riders, that way I don’t have to wrestle with the guilt of eating up the community’s dwindling supply of garage Queen parts, then wrecking them in a crash 😂
