£10 to fit a spoke!!??

My LBS charges 85p a spoke with a 5p discount per spoke if you get a wheel built.. That's £25.60 a wheel before labour so it takes it to £30 and then a true is £5 you you spend £70 on a pair of wheels being built and trued if all they supply is the spokes..

That price seems unreasonable too me. Maybe to others it's fair but each to there own..

Also I saw nothing wrong with that post dbmtb.. Could you define your issue with it please?

I would expect to pay about £20 to £25 for a wheel build and around half that for a true and tension. That's just labour, no spokes or rim tape etc. Rim tape is £2 a wheel and spokes are typically £10 to £25 a wheel depending on what you want.

you see what i charge full price to build a wheel

on a side note i charge labour at half the normal price for retrobikers and price match parts and if i cant get it that cheap i say buy and forward it too me build so everyone's happy

Do you seriously believe that moonlighters undercutting real jobs and real wages is good for the economy? It seemed to work wonders on the Greek and Italian economies though. What about insurance? Have you considered the implications if someone is injured as a consequence of a mistake you have made or a faulty part you have fitted? Do I need to say any more? Perhaps - but it's all I am going to say as this thread is not about politics or economy.

£70 to build wheels including £30 worth of spokes = £20 a wheel=bargain.
For some reason the price of spokes seems to have rocketed over the last few years - I think it's because factory-built wheels are so widespread.

I used to be the one that was stitched up to reality check then with diplomatic reasoning that "were busy and there's a queue and that yes your bike is nice and no it doesn't let you jump the line" followed by if they persist and are rude with "did you buy the bike from us sir"

I so badly miss the humour of my native tongue. You just can't pull the "polite question as retort" trick off in Danish as it's culturally incompatible. And it's a pain in the arse - it can get you out of so many spots.

I build my own wheels too. I was just saying that's what I would expect to pay and I dont think its un-reasonable!!!

I still don't think you understand what it takes to run a business versus working in your shed.

£10 minus the VAT that you do not charge means the LBS is only charging £8, the other £2 goes to the treasury, the shop does not get to keep it.

From that £8 charged;
If the employee is on £8 an hour it's costing the shop about £8.88 an hour to employ that person after NI. So a 15 minute job costs £2.22 in wages. That leaves £5.78 for other overheads such as rent, electricity other employees etc etc. if the shop makes 50p profit from that £8 (16%) I would think that was realistic.

When you "undercut" the LBS you do not have those overheads and you do not contribute any money to the country throught VAT.

Most garages charge £30-£90 per hour for labour only.

Not distracting from the fact the price charged sounds very reasonable.

But if the shop is charging a tenner including VAT, then he will be charging £8.33 net. However on his profit he will also have to pay tax, at somewhere between 20%-30%.
