£10 to fit a spoke!!??

I do usually do all my own stuff but I am in Sheffield so I can't do it.

I was told the spoke size was strange. Between a 258 and 260

I suppose it isn't exactly a huge price but it did seem excessive. I only charge £5 a wheel for a true and tension plus a full bearing check on the hub. But then I do grossly undercut my LBS.

I do know the owner of the shop but he wasn't in. I suppose it would of been cheaper with him there.

Even with the price the work was perfect. Totally true and round.

My first reaction before reading all the replies was that it seemed quite reasonable. How much were you expecting to pay?

£2 is VAT
Leaving £8 to pay for wages, taxes, overheads, depreciation and perhaps a little profit.

It gets better! You charge a fiver, do you declare it or is it cash in hand? I'm assuming that it's cash in hand. The bike shop will pay NI contributions, VAT and so on. Your £5 charge is pretty much equal to their £10 charge once you factor in all the legally required overhead, not really that excessive at all is it?

To be honest I was told it was something strange.

I was shown a 258 and a 260 and it wasn't that. I measured it and it came up a 258.5 which confused me.

I got a quote from my original LBS a few months ago and they tried to charge £20 a wheel for a true. Which was how I came to do my own work.

I guess it was a shock to me. I'll be more considerate of overheads and such in future.

I guess I should be more in touch with my competition!
