Today's Ride

Got back from last weeks ride feeling like it was tough work towards the end. Bike had developed a terrible creaking noise. When I got home I found the nds bottom bracket bearings had seized solid. Creaking started after cafe stop so assume it was on the way out before and cooling down sealed the deal. Not great for a bike that’s less than a year old though it could be in part down to me as it may have had the pressure washer dust over that area a bit.

This week new bb bearings and a clean/oil of the drivetrain and it felt like I’ve got new legs.

Local ride today, cool and sunny when we started, pretty hot by the time we got back. My mates bees were making the most of the sunny weather, where I left my bike is as close as I’d want to get. Great cafe stop at Nene Valley Railway, bike ride, coffee, cake and trains doesn’t get much better!

Sorry my photography is very much point and press, my wife has tried to tell me about composition and where the light is etc, still don’t get it.

I never thought I could get my BB7 so hot to colour the disc and fade all the power of it around here on my 'own' trails. ...but today I proved that all it takes is only bad braking technic. 👍

(yesterday's ride) Not getting many opportunities to head out on the bikes at the moment so when I do the legs are feeling very slow 👎

Still a nice cycle though, just a variation on the usual loop through the lanes around Nailsea/Clevedon with a stop at the Clevedon end to have a look at some scenic mud

Lovely sunny day.Did a 14 mile test ride for the Wife's new Dawes bike,i rode her other one ( on the left )with the saddle jacked up in case she wanted to swap back. On the road a guy on a race bike passed us said "Hello" to me and "Nice bike" to my wife, and when we got to our destination an old guy came over and also admired it and told us about his day's doing Audax on a Dawes Galaxy !

No photos today: very wintry weather here at the moment and my rides during the week took place on a stationary trainer in the shed -- not only boring, but hard to replicate the kind of work you need to do in the real world. Today was chilly and with a strengthening wind, giving rise to the perennial quandary: go early when it's colder but less windy, or wait for warmer but windier conditions? I opted for the latter, wrapped up in a few layers, and tooled off on a well-trodded (ridden?) route out to a network of gravel roads in a forestry reserve nearby.

As ever, the wind was deceptive: as I cranked painfully into a frigid blast I meditated on why I always underestimate it, and concluded that it's because often we have more of a steady stream of wind, rather than gusts of various speeds. If you look out of the window, the trees aren't tossing around in successive blasts, which gives the impression the wind isn't that strong. Head directly into it on a long, straight road, though, and you realise it's pretty powerful.

Anyway, that's my excuse: the road westward was a bit of a trial as a lower gear was maintained and the wind gradually leached any hint of warmth from my extremities. I opted out of tooling up into the forestry reserve and turned back along the same stretch of tarmac -- and with that breeze behind, bowled home in double-quick time. All up, that was a 22-km ride at about 5 degrees C, averaging 24km/h over the whole. And suddenly, spinning away in the shed has gained new appeal . . .

Similar scenario here, obviously not winter but whilst it has been sunny we've also been getting pretty bad winds. Went for the early ride out the door at 5am hoping to clock up a good 60/70 miles, ended up getting rained on within thirty minutes of being out then trying to compete with headwinds in what felt like every direction. Only direction it ended up being relatively calm was east which doesn't really help when going half a mile east puts me in the ocean. Ended up 40.71 miles and 2084ft elevation in 2h:27. Always funny coming back from spending a few hours fighting for your life in the winds, checking Strava/mywindsock etc and they claim a mere 27 minute headwind at 5.2mph. Back to bed for an hour I reckon 😂

Well that's a better effort than I managed!

Went out later with the dog and took a couple of iPhone shots. This is where the local MTB'ers go for a bit of rough.
