boy"O"boy's 1990 Serotta Offroad Pro-flex

Looking so good !!

I had a peek for a frame number on mine, under the BB there’s absolutely nothing 😆🤦

- btw I’m keen to see how to sort the pivot out! I’ll be doing the same job on mine 👍

Progress! - so the colour is finally done
Plenty of wet flatting between coats.
The paint has been scotchbrited in readiness for dropping into the company paint shop for it's 2K clear coat. The colour looks flat at the moment because of this, once the clear coat is on the colours should really pop.

Cleaning and polishing the Suntour XC Pro group set next.....with pictures of course.
Turnaround on the clear coat could take several days depending on how busy the paint shop is.

More to come soon.

Cheers

The smallest of updates but ...The Pro flex is now out of the paint shop and looking shiny in it's 2K lacquer finish that's been baked in a temperature controlled both. We've been busy with work so it's been about a 5 week wait to get some booth space.

Hoping to start the build - well connect the frame back together! This weekend. Install bottom bracket and headset.

The parts cache for the Suntour XC Pro is complete. A bit of Autosol polishing needed on the mechs and Chainset, but everything else is ready to go.
The headset is a NOS item, everything else is VGC condition.
There are 2 Chainsets. Still undecided on the darker or bronze chainrings. The Chainset with the darker rings has had a lot more use - it was on my long gone Trek 8700 Composite. I'm polishing this one, the other will stay a more standard colour but will swap the chainrings between them depending on what suits the build.

The grease guard hubs will form the basis of an alternative wheelset. I've got a really nice Mavic Paris Gao Dakar wheelset that I'm keen to use on this build.

With the Ridgeback also in line to build, the coming weekends will start to get exciting as they progress. Updates to follow here (and on the Ridgeback build thread) soon.

Cheers.

Oh Yes! O-Boy! I can smell that freshly baked paint all the way from South Wales! Lovely stash of Suntour and those Mavic wheels aren't too bad either! 😜 Good to hear works been keeping you out of mischief!

:cool:

I would probably go with the darker chainrings to sit better with the groupset and wheels
@mk one
Good call Mark. I'll probably take some pictures mid build to show both but like idea of better suiting the wheels.

@27motorhead
Yeah. I've been keen to get this underway for weeks since laying down the colour..... unfortunately work does get in the way sometimes, and those full size exterior models do take up a lot of booth space!

Been reading those 1990 MBUK's again to keep the momentum going....Remind myself why these Serotta Pro-flex's were the stuff of dreams.

Just look at that MBUK with GT's Dave Wonderly on the cover riding a prototype Zaskar! :cool: If I'm not mistaken, this shot might have been taken whilst he rode at the indoor race at the NEC, Birmingham where they had a giant BMX style track and a trails course. His bike failed at this event. There was a video on YouTube at one point regarding this event, but I think has sadly vanished.

Lovely Trek 8000, a friend has one BITD

@27motorhead Page 2 has a scan of the race results from Feb 1990. That's the one with Jamie Carr riding a Serotta Pro-flex. (The article also has Sean MacConnamara on a Ridgeback 605!)
I'll have to scan the Dave Wonderly trials article at some point... It had a great poster with him on his Zaskar prototype. That probably went on many bedroom walls!

So. Short on time this evening but wanted to start reassembly of the frame. Put the flex stem back together instead.
Pleased with this one. @MR OX karma'd this one to me from his spares box. Was missing the quill bolt, wedge and cable guide. Here it is as received.

Full strip and repaint, here is the same stem next to the original purchased from @manitou916
( As a back up in case the repaint failed)
I'll rob the bolt, wedge and top cap from this one and keep my eye out for more spares to restore this 2nd one eventually.

Decals yet to be added but looks like a new one!

More to come tomorrow. 🤞🏻

Thanks for reminding me! 🤣 What a great read (again!) with some awesome photos! Nice work on the Flexstem, coming along nicely. 💪👍
