I'm not so familiar with the Mk1 Big Un (mine are all Mk2) but it looks like you've got a MK2 QR axle there. I don't think that fits the MK1 hub?

Pop up the frame number please. It'll be able to put a date on the frame and help others.

I think the orange one is newer. It has the additional holes for the bungee fastener, so you can adjust the tension. The red one just has holes for the downtube clips. Do they have a moulding date stamped on the underside?

Frame number on this suggests a 1997 build date.

I've taken a note of this one as I've only a limited number of Giants recorded, despite their ubiquity. The Asian serial number guide is useful but not infallible. It says this scheme was '1987-1989: GFyxxxxx' whereas the OP's bike is definitely newer and seems to follow the scheme. I have also...

I hadn't heard of the old chalk way route before. It sounds very interesting and ends in my neck of the woods.

Did you ever use these brakes? Interested to know how the Magura/Auriga combo works in practice.
