I've got U-brakes on a few bikes and I love them. The biggest drawback is mud, so they'd be well suited to a project that might be a cruiser.

One of the ones that came up a few times before in Harrow was the 1989 Limited Edition, which also had gold plated parts but a wishbone stay. Someone from a shop that owned one of them also posted and mentioned a small dent on the top tube, which should make that one easier to isolate. [edit]...

They ride nicely too imo. A bit more of an upright riding position than most my bikes, but I've had two and still have one, built as a single speed (horizontal dropouts).
