OMG, 105 for the win, being cheap is now' retro

Definitely snooker and darts - except it's beta-blockers there. I laughingly said to a physio friend who has done work for endurance racing (Le Mans etc) that he must be working in the only clean sport and he said that it's amphetamines instead.

What year....RE Marin, and spec recommendations.

Spinner make forks, Rockstar is Marin's fork branding. Most Rockstar forks were made by Spinner I think. As for headsets, assuming you are running threaded, the best is probably Campagnolo Record road, plenty around for £50 new. The older ones also have grease ports in the lower race. There is...

OMG, 105 for the win, being cheap is now' retro

Go to any race with teams other than the UCI top 16 and there is lots of 105 around.

Will I ever see hubs I aspire to for rim brake, 36h rims?

The ones to avoid are 780.

Will I ever see hubs I aspire to for rim brake, 36h rims?

There are a fair few XT hubs around, although I would avoid the later ones and use LX. They shifted to aluminium axles and shrunk the bearings, which made them fragile.

When did it lose it for you.....

I lost it at full sus. OF COURSE they are more capable over the big stuff, and I might well feel differently if I lived and rode in the Peak District. But it's overkill where I ride - and I hate the whole bike park / trail centre thing. From the late 90s they all got too niche and...

    For Sale FSA XC-300 26” wheels, £25 +post

Pair FSA XC-300 wheels. Light set at 1730g the pair excluding skewers and rotors. Both true. Rear has had one replacement spoke, freehub body has a wobble, was removed and flushed through with heavy oil this winter after slipping episodes - now operating fine, but don't expect it to last forever...

Help with identification and history - Witcomb and Claud Butler

Just to add to that excellent post (and thanks @juvela for the identification of the fork crown on mine, which had mystified). My 1980 Witcomb has a Bocama bottom bracket, just visible under the cable guides on the top of the BB. It looks the same as the Witcomb here.

    Long drop calliper advice

Tektro R539 or R559, depending on the drop you need. They are available in black, work very well and are decently finished. As far as I know, SRAM never made a deep drop calliper, while Shimano's excellent non-series R600 was not produced in black. I'm very satisfied with the R559 setup on my...

    Fork steerer replacing

You will need a framebuilder - essentially they have to melt the braze and remove the old steerer, then fit a new one. Alternatively, some might remove the top of the steerer and braze on a new extension. In this second case you will probably not have to repaint. Have a look here...

Suggestions for a lightweight (folding) 26" x 1.5ish slick tyre?

I have run Schwalbe Marathon Greenguard for 10 years or so. They are surprisingly fast (have a look at bicyclerollingresistance.com) and very puncture resistant. While they are wired they do very well.
