you definitely can make a great cross country rig out of that. I converted my 857 to 1x10 modern deore XT and replaced the shocks with Risses..and its awesome. super light, handles like a go-cart..super rigid front end / steering.
you also could put a57 rear end on that..proflex team bikes...

looks GREAT...but a few suggestions...
-a few random parts from the 2000s
-weld a disc brake tab to the frame?
-bar ends on a riser bar?
-chain tensioner?
-double clamp fork?

Well this is done...very happy with it.
I found a near NOS Marinoni MTB which gave up its pristine M900 Group / Wheelset. The seatpost part was machined out of Aluminum and polished..fits perfectly!
