A genuine question about the dork disc?

Because the purpose they serve is only relevant if you've failed to set your derailleur correctly.
Because they normally fail at their purpose the first time they are asked to serve it.
^^
....So primarily supplied fitted on kids and beginner bikes, assuming they'll be thrown on the ground derailleur side down and not checked before riding away...

Thus in turn then associated with cheap, low end bikes, meaning the snobs (like us) remove them to prove we know how to check and set derailleur up properly.

You wouldn't find a single bike in the Argos (retail chain) catalogue without one,
just as you wouldn't find a single bike in the Argos (framebuilders of Bristol) with one. 😉

Simple Badge of Shame.

I have no issue with seeing dork discs still fitted to retrobikes after all these years. It's amazing they have survived all these years without turning yellow and breaking apart.

Functionally they aren't always great and if you want to ride your bike and maintain it properly, they are much more of a hinderance than a help.

Potential BOTM suggestion??? ;)
