Could we have a bit more ettiquette and manners before this turns into the ( no-longer-any-bargains ) Ebay? I understand that " Dibs are non-enforceable and strictly at the sellers discretion. " but twice this week I've missed lovely bargains as, although I " dibbed " first, other buyers PMed and got the bargains instead.
Yes, I'm moaning; yes, it was all above board and in the rules of the forum; NO, it wasn't polite and seems to show the more predatory ( read: not-in-the-retrobike-spirit ) attitude of people who may feel more comfortable on Ebay than on this once lovely website.

Yes, the non publicised secret PM's that offer wads of cash, a nod and a wink.

It is getting a bit hectic in there.

suely if the pm date and time is before your dibs then fair is fair?
unless stated in the thread
dibs first on thread followed by pm
or similar?
but agreed, if yo ave dibs first and it went to a pm buyer afteryour dibs this is neither fair nor polite

look at it from the other angle though.
look through old sale threads and you'll hear hundreds of cries of dibs then a few posts down the item is still for sale. i get loads of people placing dibs and not following it up. it really grates me actually as the sight of a dib often puts other genuine buyers off.

by saying you want to dib an item i take that is asking the seller if they will hold it, not telling them.

dib is a funny word isnt it?

yes the world isnt really suited to dibs although if it was this is probably the best place for it to be used
'can i dibs that until i get paid tomorrow' etc.
although i assumed that when you dibs, its a definite and no haggling, unless its not as described or whatever

that situation isnt so bad if people actually say that. what annoys me is " can i dib this while i check my gran's dog's blood pressure" then you never hear from them again.

i think i am in a bad mood today!

The problem with dibs, as a buyer is that to many people it means "Don't sell this, because I might want it".

I was selling a set of wheels once. I was contacted by someone that said "Can you send me these, and I'll pay for them next week", then when I said no said "Can you hold them until next week", so I asked for a postdated cheque, and they still said no. Eventually, I said I was prepared to hold them if said purchaser put a message up on my for sale thread promising to pay for them. Surprise surprise, they said no.

Ultimately, it's got to be up to the seller to decide who gets the item. [/i]

yes some fairness and politeness goes a long way
i only dibs if i have the money and im willing to pay the sellers price
sometimes i will ask for a temporary hold while i check something o wait for pictures but state so
honesty
i always chase up dibs unless i forget

Must admit it annoys me more when I state 'dibs/interested on the thread followed by PM' and then just get people PM'ing me as it doesn't show others that there's a que. Also been stung by this when buying. Agree that dibs/PM's that are not followed are annoying but I guess there's no perfect method. :? Really bad form when an item is promised to you but then sold from under your nose to some one that has not registered interest on the thread and probably come in with a higher offer. I try to play fair so hope others do too.
