VRC ????

ive just read the posts ...sheesh it reminds me of a discussion that trotsky, lenin and stalin had in the 20s on what a real russion patriot was....none of them convinced the other that they were correct.in the end they all became deeply suspisious of each other and nothing got done or sorted .except for trotsky.he died in mexico with a really bad headache.i think my point is that even tho they were all passionate about the subject..none of them agreed what it actually was..same here i guess...only without the mass murder ...

on another note ..there is no way im joining that site ...imagine the abuse id get with my taste in colour schemes.

I ride modern bikes - yet i come on here due to the fact that everyone i've met - without exception - has been a decent chap. I would quite happily, and often do, go riding with anyone here. Some of the comments on there? wouldn't piss on them if they where on fire. Let them have their forum just how they like it - keeps them, from polluting this great place.

Not sure if you followed how retrobike.co.uk developed over the years. There was NO resistance at all to keep things "clean". Only tolerance (i think it's just ignorance and carelessness) and that's how it looks like there now. 90% old junk, no passion, dumb questions, useless threads and even sub-forums for modern bikes and off-topic chat. Again, there's not a single person to define what is "clean" or crap nor should it be formulated. A healthy community with a sufficient amount of passionate regulars will balance it out
.

Ein Volk! Ein Reich!... Retro eugenics is the only answer, we must build an uber race of perfect Kleins, all identical, un contaminated with the components of inferior specification...

For the love of all that is holy, they're only bicycles, old bicycles at that. Granted some of them are stunning works of engineering but please, get some perspective (ask your friendly Snap-On rep for the part number).

I think for me, it's all about the types and bikes I saw when I first was drawn to mountain biking.

And for those that see themselves as purists, and barely disguising disdain for more normal, middle-of-the-road bikes, I see them as drifting towards slightly leaning ivory towers.

When I was actively mountain biking - from around 88 to early / mid 90s, the bikes I saw being ridden weren't high-end exotica. They ranged from entry-level steeds, to (mainly) middle-level bikes.

To be honest (apart from loving the almost pure engineering excellence of Pace bikes) I never really aspired to high-end bikes - partly because they weren't part of the experience for me, and partly because as enthusiastic as I was, I wasn't a high-end rider. My view was always that the bike should largely reflect the level and use the bike was put to. There's nothing so daft, to my eyes, as a high-end, expensive bike, being ridden by an average cyclist.

The true spirit of retrobike, to me anyways, is shown most simply in the thread about the Bear Valley build - that's the sort of work, bike, and results I like to see, not some high-end bikes that only the privileged few could afford, but were largely ridden by people who had all the money but none of the essence of cycling that I appreciated.

I've been on my holidays so have missed this thread dribbling away... In my view, there's really only one or two people who currently inhabit VRC who vigorously admit to taking great exception to the broad church approach to retro/vintage building/collecting/riding/reminiscing - as demonstrated here and elsewhere in Europe.

Somewhere in those beliefs, there's a sensible and well-meant debate about the roles of public forums and striving for common 'agreements' as to the 'standards' that people might go to, particularly in building a catalogue or period MTBs.

Sadly, those debates descend quickly into personal and inter-forum incite, not insight. We, as moderators, try to keep the Retrobike name away from such negative and futile slanging matches, however this has often proven difficult, as the name is sometimes used erroneously and libelously make 'points', usually by the same few guys.

Recently there has also been some willful or cultural confusion between 'passion' for what one might choose to restore and the level achieved and 'elitism', in relation to one's ability to complete the build to a certain standard before one might dare to show it online. This isn't the sort of debate that can be engaged in healthily on a public forum, as many examples of frothy vitriol will testify, however it's an itch some folks love to scratch!

Maybe some US-based builders and collectors fail to understand or recall that the European experience was built on an entirely different history - later in time and based on very different concepts of what an MTB was and how it should look. These days some view our fascination with period after-market items (particularly anything anodised!) with thinly-veiled disdain, as though this marked the end of the classic period of MTBs, or even worse, as though this activity did not actually happen. Again, another futile debate to have in a public forum...

The good news is that those few provocateurs now proclaim to hate 'Retrobike' so much that they wouldn't be seen dead reading this thread! ;)

I am sure that there are much better days around the corner - as both forums have a great deal to offer each other, not least in making friends (I got to ride Repack through VRC!), swapping knowledge and parts and generally keeping our shared enthusiasm alive.

Mr K

Bloody well said that man! I've just sat for an hour reading the bitter drivel written over on mtbr. I don't think I have ever seen such crap spew from the mouths of so called 'educated people' Why cannot this minority just get it into their narrow minds that things are and always were different over this side of the pond? Passion? they talk of passion? Theres plenty of that stuff over here- both in the forum and out on the trail.
Let them look down on us from their fillet brazed Ivory tower, I'm loading up my truck to go out and ride my vintage bike with my good buddies from RetroBike. If any of the elitist, self important cocks over on mtbr would like to join us, they are more than welcome. Just leave the bile at the door OK?

I just don't understand why they can't simply ignore threads they don't like??? That's what I do unless I feel I can offer constructive criticism. See a bike I don't like? Move on to the next thread. The thread will quickly fall down the list into obscurity.

just read the whole 2 pages.

There are some very bitter people on there. Insecure too. They have created their own little world where they can be king and order the destruction (thread wise at least) of whomever they please.

Take that away from them and they are fat comic book guy man.

Such an apt description!

I also just read the whole thread, and they really are a bunch of sad gits. Much like an "alternative" crowd (thinking 90's here) who get upset when alternative becomes cool and feel the need to scream at the top of their lungs how they were here first. It's sad when people live in the so-called former glory of the past, and suddenly wake up a sad 40-year-old git who feels left out and unappreciated by the new "cool kids." It's so pathetic, you almost have to feel sorry for them. More sad is how some of the more vocal "cool kids" post or have posted here, while insulting the members here (and their "junk") on VRC. A tad two-faced methinks. Oh well, **** 'em...they're so full of bitternous and jealousy over their lost status that it must be punishment enough.
