Vitus 979 Build - Revisited

Changed my mind on the front derailleur and decided to keep the group as full SSC so...

Started with an 810 (clamp on) and 862 (braze on SSC)

Finished up with a 812 (braze on) and 860 (clamp on SSC)

The only difference between the 810 and 860 is that the 810 has silver anodised parts and the 860 is black anodised with a logo. Mechanically they're identical.

Nice! Here's my Vitus... I went with Mavic as well.. I did a bit of a Mix-Match of mavic groups... even the stem is made by mavic (most ppl didn't know they made stems)...

I like the matching wheels!

I'm aware of the Mavic stems but I've yet to see one in the 22.0mm French size.
Any that I've seen are 22.2mm

Maybe someday I'll get lucky and score a rare bargain.

Are you sure your frame is 22.0 ?? I have had several vitus 979's and none of them were 22.0

Positive.
Forks have French threads with 22.0mm internal diameter.
Frame has French threads on the BB.

An unpleasant surprise as I already had a pair of SSC headsets in hand (310 & 305) but both are English thread. :facepalm:

drat... I have had MANY Vitus frames but I guess being in Canada none of them have been French...

I have two 992's and a ZX1 i'm selling... all three are English... incase you want a replacement =)

It's really starting to look like a bike again.

SSC 631 Starfish crankset now polished and fitted.
These are 170.00 39/53 and only needed mild fettling to remove minor marks.
The beauty of the 631 is that they're polished and lacquered from the factory rather than anodised so they're very easy to refinish if required.

The water bottle cage is a stainless 'Moderniste' from velo orange fixed with some nice tapered stainless bolts that I found in the parts bin.

New Rolls saddle.
Not the lightest thing in the world but oh so comfy.

And the new decals arrived from seller Dizzibird on eBay... much better colour this time.

Almost done now.
Originality had to be compromised in the name of practicality so the original Mavic brake shoes went into the archives and some modern Swiss Stop Flash Pro BXP were bolted on instead.

I still need to make a call on gearing.
Options are
a] period correct Shimano 600 13 - 21 6 speed
b] period correct Maillard Corse 14 - 20 6 speed
c] modern Shimano 14 - 28 7 speed

My head says the 14-28.
My heart says the 14-20 Maillard.
My legs say listen to your head.
