Another tip is to use your oven to bake the paint, saves time waiting for it to air dry

Let it air dry before you bake it or you risk bubbles forming and getting trapped.

+ 1 Satin black car paint.
If you have a greenhouse, I used to paint stuff in there (newspaper over the windows !).
Leave hanging in there for a few days bakes paint on beautifully.

I need a glossy finish on my stem/seatpost though so I might go for Hammerite if they do a gloss.

Any primer needed?

Think you can get the Hammerite Direct To Rust in Gloss as well.

That stem I did was a blue Marin one originally, I began rubbing it down with sandpaper but got bored, so just did enough to give it a "key", washed it with soapy water, let it dry, then sprayed it, a few coats later and it was done
It's not too fussy about the surface you spray it onto.

You need to prime alloys be for applying hammerite or smoothrite else it just dinnae stick properly.

oh, and if you paint something satin black, you can turn it into gloss black with some T-cut, some polish, and some elbow grease.
At least in my experiences.
